WED Credit Union

WED Credit Union Credit Unions are a community, non-profit making, savings and borrowings organisation, owned and run by their members and to encourage regular saving.

Whitehaven, Egremont & District Credit Union were newly formed in April 2010 as the result of a merger between Whitehaven Credit Union, and Egremont & District Credit Union. The two credit unions were set up to address the issue of financial exclusion, which a lot of low income families and individuals suffer from. They also needed to address the problem of the high cost of borrowing money (from b

anks or doorstep lenders etc.) The aim was effectively to establish a community-run business, which would actively encourage members to add to their savings whilst at the same time would give them access to low cost affordable loans. Junior savers schemes were also set up to encourage saving at a young age, which would hopefully break the cycle of reliance on doorstep lending – which has become a pattern in many families. The two credit unions have now merged are still working to further fulfil these aims. Our mission statement as a Credit Union is β€œto provide people who live or work in the (common bond) area access to savings and affordable loans to improve quality of life”.

🚨 Your car breaks down. The boiler stops working. Your washing machine gives up.

And it happens at exactly the wrong time; when there’s not enough money left until payday.

When an unexpected expense lands, it can be tempting to grab the quickest loan you can find. But quick doesn’t always mean cheap - and the wrong borrowing choice can make a difficult situation even harder.

Our latest blog looks at your options when you need money quickly, including:

πŸ’· Using savings
πŸ”§ Delaying or reducing the cost where possible
⚠️ What to watch out for with payday and short-term loans
🀝 How a credit union could help
πŸ’° How building even a small emergency fund can make a difference

We believe borrowing should be affordable and manageable, not something that leaves you struggling to keep up.
