It’s Coeliac Awareness Week (18th – 24th May 2026), a time to raise awareness of coeliac disease and support those living with a strict gluten-free diet.
Coeliac disease is a serious, lifelong autoimmune condition where the immune system reacts to gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye) and damages the lining of the small intestine. This can affect how the body absorbs nutrients and may cause symptoms such as pain, bloating, and fatigue. Around 1 in 100 people in the UK are affected.
Managing a gluten-free diet can sometimes feel challenging, particularly when travelling or eating outside the home. With a bit of planning and the right support, it becomes much more manageable.
Helpful Travel Tips for Coeliac Travellers:
• Use Gluten-Free Travel Cards: These cards explain your dietary needs in the local language, which is especially helpful in non-English-speaking countries.
• Research Before You Go: Use trusted websites, forums, or apps like Find Me Gluten Free to check restaurant options and grocery stores.
• Pack Reliable Snacks: Always bring gluten-free snacks in your hand luggage or suitcase in case gluten free food isn’t immediately available.
• Let Airlines Know Early: Request gluten-free meals in advance and confirm again at check-in.
• Check Local Laws on Labelling: Understanding how each country handles food labelling can help you make safer choices.
Most people can tolerate gluten without any issue — coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, not an allergy or a dietary preference.
