😕"I know I should..."
It's probably one of the sentences I hear most from business owners.
😕"I know I should sort my old pensions."
😕"I know I should start paying into a pension through my business."
😕"I know I should come and see you."
Then I meet the same person a year later... and I hear exactly the same sentence.

📃I don’t judge. I know exactly why the are delaying.
It's because pensions aren't their area of expertise. They feel complicated, so they stay on the to do list.

We all do it.
🌿I do exactly the same with gardening.
🌸I know I should by now have some flowers in the garden that don’t die after a week, but investing is different.

Every month you delay is another month your money isn't working for you.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't making the decision.
It's making a start.

📰Why headlines can lead us to make poor financial decisions...

🤨Interest rates have changed
Should you put buying your home on hold?
Probably not.
🏠Buying a home should be based on your circumstances, not one Bank of England announcement.

📉 The stock market fell
Should you stop investing or move everything to cash?
History suggests the opposite.
Markets have fallen many times before, but long term investors have often been rewarded for staying invested rather than trying to time the market.

🤨The Government announced another tax change."
Should you completely change your financial strategy?
Probably not.
It might mean making a few adjustments, but one announcement rarely changes a long term plan.

⚠Most financial headlines disappear within days.
Your financial plan should still make sense years from now.

🚫Reacting feels productive...
BUT sticking to a well thought out plan is usually the best option (I love this. It sounds like something you'd actually say in a meeting).

Was anyone actually surprised?

I don't think that's what most people are tired of.
I think we're tired of the uncertainty.

I speak to business owners every week, and many are putting plans on hold because they're waiting for things to feel a bit more certain.

🙄The problem is... I'm not sure they ever will.
There will always be another Bank of England meeting.
Another Budget.
Another headline.

I was once told to look at where we are on the timeline of our lives.
Will one day, one month, or even one year really matter if you're investing for the next 20 or 30 years?

One thing has changed massively since I started in financial services.

I stopped talking about insurance.
And I started talking about income.

But here's what fascinates me...
❓When I ask how much the business is worth, most people don't know.
❓When I ask how much they'll actually need to retire, most people don't know that either.

🙃Yet they're relying on one to fund the other.

Maybe it's because we're so busy running our businesses that we never stop to ask the bigger questions.

😳There is this one thought that I can’t shake off at the moment…

When I started Tantum, I never really considered it as my retirement plan.

I wanted to build a business that gives expert advice without the jargon, where clients are genuinely better off with me than without me.

I'd love my son to take it over one day. Maybe that's because I grew up around my dad's family business and I've always liked the idea of building something that lasts.

🤔But then a few months ago, AI really got me thinking.
Will people even want advice from someone like me in a couple of years' time?

❓Or will they just ask AI instead?
I honestly don't know.

So, I can't be certain what my own business will look like in the future, how can any of us be certain our business will fund our retirement?

🤖That's why I think having a plan outside your business matters.
Not because I don't believe in businesses.
Because we are living through exceptional times.
