Meeting report - SIGnet Taunton: Monday 4 November 2024

Not a Budget for savers and investors!
That’s the conclusion of Taunton’s private investors’ group, held at the Taunton and Tiverton Golf Club on Monday.
Following last Wednesday’s Autumn Budget, Rachel Reeves’ pronouncements have left private investors reeling and revising their plans.
ISAs and Self Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPS) are popular vehicles which most savers and investors rely on. The group was relieved that ISAs remain untouched, enabling savers to build-up savings (already taxed through earnings) free income and capital gains tax.
But that’s not the case with SIPPs. These are pension savings which the government ostensibly encourages people to take-up. They have until now being passed on death free if inheritance tax (IHT). Not any more it seems, and the changes have SIPP holders scrambling to change their retirement plans.
SIPPs are now to be taxed as part of the holder’s estate, using up part of the Nil Rate Band (NRB), the tax-free allowance. So, savings paid into these private pensions, over many years in most cases, in the belief that they could be drawn down, or passed to the next generation tax-free, is shattered
This has come as a bombshell to those with substantial savings in their pension pots. The result: members plan to run-drawn down these funds earlier than planned and are discouraged from making future savings into these private pensions.
Further disquiet was expressed over the treatment of farmers and business owners whose assets are now to be subject to a 20 percent inheritance tax (IHT) charge above a basic rate of £1mn. For business owners it removes incentive to build their business.
Likewise, small-scale farmers. When a single tractor can cost a quarter of the basic £1mn allowance, farmers are in shock. Small farms rely on subsidies to break even, most make little by way of profits, so how will the next generation ever raise enough money to pay IHT liabilities?
The conclusion of the group: coupled with the other measures announced by Ms Reeves affecting business, this is not a Budget for economic growth.

New SIGnet investor discussion group starts in South West

The group is a part of SIGnet, an established network of investor groups that
gather regularly to talk about investment opportunities.
We have now mover to Taunton & Pickering Golf Club - https://www.tauntongolf.co.uk/
Meeting are held every 1st Monday in the month, 11am until around 2pm at the Taunton & Pickering Golf Club, Corfe near Taunton TA3 7BY.
The group (initially 7 members) intends to expand its member base from the
South West region, holding ten monthly meetings per year - August is excluded for holidays.
The group's goal is to improve investment skills among members from around the South-west, catering to both seasoned and aspiring investors.
According to a survey by Hargreaves Lansdown, only 23 per cent of UK citizens
invest in the stock market compared to around two-thirds of the American public,
prompting groups like SIGnet to attempt to bridge the gap.
Despite being an investment group, SIGnet does not function as an investment club.
There is no shared investment pool or collective decision-making, and financial discussions about individual's wealth are off the table.
Instead, the focus is fostering investing skills, personal decisions, and spotting
promising opportunities.
A Manchester SIGnet group member illustrated the benefits gained from his membership when he said:
"SIGnet for me has been life changing, it has played a big role in improving my knowledge and understanding of how to develop a safe investing process. I
applaud it for nurturing my knowledge and my wealth in a relaxed social
environment."
