Last week’s budget had a few surprises tucked away that will affect savers.

Robbing Rachel announced a plan to increase tax on savers, and Dishonest John has continued this tax grab.

From 6th Apri 2027, the levels of tax, which will apply to savers across the UK, will be 24% for basic-rate taxpayers, 44% for higher-rate taxpayers and 49% for those on the additional rate.

Proper financial planning can help our clients avoid this tax on their hard-earned savings.

Changes are on the horizon. The biggest overhaul of the ISA (Individual Savings Account) regime in several years is coming into effect on 6 April 2027, with new rules designed to encourage more people to invest rather than hold cash. While the overall annual ISA allowance remains unchanged, there are several important changes savers should be aware of.

As we move into autumn, the UK housing market remains relatively subdued. Higher borrowing costs and economic uncertainty continue to weigh on demand, while house prices have shown little movement. However, the market remains active, with buyers and sellers continuing to adjust to the current environment.

Consumer confidence reaches a two-year high

The GfK Consumer Confidence Barometer rose by one point to -13 in September.

This was its third consecutive monthly increase and the highest reading since August 2024.

Households reported feeling better about their own finances and the wider economy. However, confidence remained in negative territory, and there were signs of caution.

The Major Purchase Index, which measures appetite for big-ticket spending, slipped one point to -8. Meanwhile, the separate Savings Index rose five points to +27.
