ASK BERNADETTE-

Question:
Why do the summer holidays seem to create so much stress and tension for separated parents when it comes to co-parenting?

Answer from Bernadette, The Mediation Specialist:

You’re not imagining it—summer holidays can be one of the most challenging times for separated parents. Suddenly, the usual routine disappears and in its place comes a complex juggling act: extended childcare, holiday plans, differing expectations, and often limited communication.

A helpful way to ease the tension is to plan ahead together. Set aside time—even if it's just a short call or a shared document—to outline what’s important for each of you and the children. Try to stay solution-focused and listen without interrupting. This small act of cooperation can go a long way.

And if it still feels difficult, the good news is: you don’t have to manage it alone. Mediation offers a safe and constructive space to sort things out with clarity and fairness—so that your children can enjoy the holidays without being caught in the middle.

Bye for now

5 Ways to Strengthen Your Co-Parenting & Family Relationships
Co-parenting isn’t just about managing calendars and logistics — it’s also about creating a steady, respectful foundation for your children to thrive, and that includes their relationship with extended family.
Here are five mindful ways to keep things working well:
1. Keep communication child-focused
Even when emotions run high, anchor every conversation in what's best for your child. Use "we" rather than "I" when possible and keep tone and language respectful.
2. Share key updates regularly
Children benefit when both parents (and sometimes grandparents) are informed. Sharing school info, achievements, or health updates helps everyone feel included and valued.
3. Set boundaries and honour them
Consistency builds trust. Whether it’s holiday plans or phone calls with grandparents, clear expectations around boundaries help avoid misunderstandings.
4. Speak positively (or neutrally) about the other parent and family
Children soak up language and tone. By modelling respect towards your ex and their family, you’re giving your child emotional permission to love both sides of their world.
5. Celebrate traditions — even new ones
Honouring old routines while gently creating new ones allows your child to enjoy continuity and adaptability — and gives extended family a sense of connection and belonging.
Co-parenting isn’t always easy — but when done well, it offers children security, love and a sense of stability. If you're navigating a tricky patch, mindful mediation can help. I’m here to support you.

Avoid Courtroom conflict and enquire about how mediation can help you.

January usually sees a dramatic rise in the number of parents deciding to live apart as the various pressures that go hand-in-hand with the Christmas period act as a final straw for relationships.

As a family mediator with over 30 years’ experience in mediation I see first-hand how mediation can help ex-partners agree what works for them, whilst avoiding the court process with all the stress, delay and cost it can bring.

“Many parents emerge from the festive period feeling defeated by the pressures on relationships and finances that have been highlighted during the holiday period.

“Here at Greater Manchester Mediation I help parents who don’t know which way to turn. Their life-changing decision to separate brings with it so many tough questions:

• Who lives where?
• Where will the children live, and how will we make sure we each spend time with them?
• How will we sort money?
• What about debts and pensions?
• And even the family dog?”

Greater Manchester Mediation participating in “Family Mediation Week” shines a helpful spotlight on these tricky issues, offering separating parents information about their options as they look to make arrangements for parenting, property and finance.

“Family mediation is a process where an independent, professionally-trained mediator helps you work these things out, enabling you to avoid courtroom confrontation. Professional mediators help empower you to create long-term solutions for your particular circumstances, rather than leaving it to a court to make decisions for your family.”

Contact Bernadette Willems of Greater Manchester Mediation who will help resolve any family relationships which have broken down or are not working well. Bernadette does that in a way which gives you much more than a solution to the presenting problem. She will provide you with life-enhancing tools which mean you can look forward to a more settled and peaceful life, knowing you have the skills to manage any future.
