ASK BERNADETTE-
Question:
Why do the summer holidays seem to create so much stress and tension for separated parents when it comes to co-parenting?
Answer from Bernadette, The Mediation Specialist:
You’re not imagining it—summer holidays can be one of the most challenging times for separated parents. Suddenly, the usual routine disappears and in its place comes a complex juggling act: extended childcare, holiday plans, differing expectations, and often limited communication.
A helpful way to ease the tension is to plan ahead together. Set aside time—even if it's just a short call or a shared document—to outline what’s important for each of you and the children. Try to stay solution-focused and listen without interrupting. This small act of cooperation can go a long way.
And if it still feels difficult, the good news is: you don’t have to manage it alone. Mediation offers a safe and constructive space to sort things out with clarity and fairness—so that your children can enjoy the holidays without being caught in the middle.
