Stilton Parish Council was formed in 1894 under theLocal Government Act 1894 which allowed the creation of civil parishes as opposed to ecclesiastical parishes
Elections
The Parish Council is elected en bloc every 4 years (next in May 2026). If there is a number of candidates equal to or fewer than the number of places no election is held and all candidates are elected un
opposed. The new council must then fill the vacancies by co-option. Casual vacancies can be filled by election but more usually by co-option. Precept
The Parish Council has the power to precept (tax)
Money can only be raised for a limited number of powers. Powers
These are limited but include
Provision of allotments
Provision of a village hall
Provision of parks, recreation and sports grounds, play areas and swimming pools
Provision of cemeteries
Support for arts and crafts

Stilton Parish Council is a member of Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Association of Local Councils (CAPALC). It has statutory links to Cambridgeshire County Council and Huntingdonshire District Council. Governance
The full Parish Council meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 7.30pm in the Church Meeting Room. Meetings are in public but non-members may not speak unless invited by the Chair, unless in the pubic participation section. The Annual Parish Meeting and the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council are held in May. The Chair and Vice Chair are elected at the Annual Meeting for 1 year. Committees
These elect a Chair at the first meeting of the year following the annual meeting
Finance and General Purposes Committee
Controls all the financial affairs of the Parish Council, including the collection of revenue and expenditure which is monitored monthly by the full council, checks Insurance, writes and recommends to the full council, the annual budget, receives auditor’s reports, recommends salaries and wages and conditions of service. Oversees the Pavilion, play areas, village maintenance contracts and burial provision. Employees
