When it comes to investing, it’s common to feel like you need to earn more, know more, or be completely comfortable with risk before you can even think about getting started.

Tax deadlines are coming up – are you ready? ⏰

If you miss a tax deadline the penalties can add up FAST. And remember – even if you have an accountant, you’re still responsible for filing and paying on time❗️

Self Assessment – Key dates to remember 📌
• 5ᵗʰ October – register for self-assessment
• 31ˢᵗ October – paper returns
• 31ˢᵗ January – online returns + tax payment
• 31ˢᵗ July – second payment on account (if applicable)

31ˢᵗ January 2027 is the deadline for your 2025/26 online tax return and tax payment. 📅

Late filing can mean penalties of £100 plus £10 per day (after 3 months), with further penalties and interest potentially following ⚠️

PAY AS YOU EARN (PAYE) + EXTRA INCOME 💷

You may be able to pay tax through PAYE. You need to request this by 30ᵗʰ December 2026.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL (MTD) 💻

Sole traders and landlords earning over £50k must keep digital records and submit quarterly updates.

Next deadline = 7ᵗʰ November 2026 📅

From April 2027, missed quarterly updates can mean penalty points:
4 points = £200 fine
Further missed deadlines = £200 each

LIMITED COMPANY? 🏢

You’ll have different deadlines for Corporation Tax, Companies House accounts, Company Tax Returns, PAYE/NIC and employee benefits.

PARTNERSHIP? 🤝

Your deadlines may differ depending on your year-end and structure.

🔎 Understand your position – start by looking at your income, spending, debts, savings and investments. Understanding the facts can help you identify what genuinely needs your attention.

🎯 Pick a priority – you don’t need to tackle everything at once. Decide what needs dealing with now and what can wait. One small meaningful action can make things feel much more manageable.

📅 Build a routine – regularly reviewing your finances can reduce avoidance and build confidence over time. Where possible, work towards an emergency fund that could cover 3 to 6 months of spending.

🤝 Seek support – talking to someone you trust, a debt charity or a financial adviser can provide guidance and reassurance. If money worries are affecting your mental health, consider seeking professional support too.

Feelings of anxiety can make you want to solve everything at once, but this isn’t always the best approach. This is a question many people don’t think about until it’s too late⏳

Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax that can be charged on the value of your estate when you pass. Including things like your home, savings and investments.

The standard IHT rate is currently 40%, but that doesn’t mean 40% of everything you own is automatically taxed. There are tax free allowances and exemptions that can reduce or even eliminate the amount of IHT due. Your family home and certain gifts can also affect the calculation.

The standard Nil Rate Band is currently £325,000. There may also be an additional allowance if you leave your home to certain direct descendants.

The important thing is to understand your position before you need to. A little planning could make a significant difference to what you’re able to pass on to the people you care about ❤️
