ng. Drawing on psychodynamic and humanistic approaches, I believe through a genuine professional relationship we can achieve greater insight for you giving you greater control of your life. I work to provide a space that is empathic, supportive, non-judgemental and safe for you to explore the issues that you want to. I also have limited space at reduced fees as I do not believe money should be a barrier to accessing counselling. I have over 2 years’ experience counselling in a local hospice and have spent time volunteering for a local community counselling organisation. In 2021 I opened my private practice. These settings have provided me with experience working with issues of loss, bereavement, identity loss (particularly with former carers), relationships, trauma, historical physical and sexual abuse, diversity & culturalism, anxiety and depression. An important thing to be aware of when seeking support as highlighted in this article.

Always check if your therapist is legitimately qualified and a member of a professional body adhering to a code of ethics and subject to a complaints policy.

I am a firm believer that counselling and psychotherapy need to be properly regulated but sadly the government are not on the same page at present.

Please share to protect others from harm.

BBC News has spoken to people who had bad experiences with unregistered therapists they found online.

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or making plans to end your life, I understand this can be a difficult thing to go through. You may be worried about telling someone. Things may feel overwhelming. You may feel isolated and alone.

Having suicidal thoughts is scary but it’s not uncommon. 1 in 5 people will experience them during their lifetime. Having suicidal thoughts doesn’t mean you are crazy. It means things are challenging right now.

But there are people you can reach out to and evidence shows that talking to someone can help.

Friends, family, colleagues, someone you share a hobby or interest with or your GP. Talk to those around you for a bit of support.
There are professionals who are trained to support people experiencing suicidal thoughts. They won’t judge you. They want to help you.

The Samaritans are available 24/7 365 days a year and can be called on 116 123 or by emailing [email protected]. https://www.samaritans.org/

If you prefer to text, Shout offer a 24/7 365 days a year text service; just send a message to 85258. https://giveusashout.org/

You can also call the NHS on 111 and they will be able to guide you to support.

If you have harmed yourself or feel you may be about to, call 999 and ask for an ambulance or go straight to A&E.

If you are feeling low or are experiencing suicidal thoughts and want a safe, non-judgemental space to talk about things, counselling can help. You can find the right counsellor for you at https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb, https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/ or https://www.bacp.co.uk/search/Therapists

When it comes to su***de, remember there are other options and with the right support, suicidal thoughts can be managed.

Tomorrow marks World Su***de Prevention Day. Each day this week I am sharing content related to su***de and su***de prevention. Please share this post to ensure it reaches someone who may need some support.

If someone tells you they are having thoughts of su***de or are making plans to end their life, the most helpful thing you can do is listen to them and try to understand how they are feeling. By creating a connection and helping the other person feel heard you could save their life.

If there is immediate risk to the person’s life, call 999 immediately.

Do your best to remain calm, patient and polite. Respect their thoughts and feelings even if they differ from your own. Avoid judging them or their situation. Repeat things back to them so they feel listened to. Keep questions open ended so they have to say more than “yes” or “no.”

Allow the person to express themselves; let them cry, shout or scream if they want as this can help. Thank them for sharing how they feel and tell them how brave they are for doing so.
It is more important to show that you care than have all the answers so avoid giving advice or making the conversation about you.

Focus on them, their feelings and ask about the support they have such as friends, family, colleagues, neighbours.

Give them information about professional support available to them such as their GP, The Samaritans, a counsellor or the emergency services if there is an immediate risk to life. This NHS link contains some useful contacts for su***de support. https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/help-for-suicidal-thoughts/

After the conversation, ensure you have support yourself as we cannot fill from an empty cup.

Talking about su***de can be very daunting. Often people are afraid that if they mention su***de to someone it will increase the risk of that person hurting themselves but this is untrue. If you are concerned for someone’s welfare, it is better to ask them directly if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Be careful of the words you use as you want to create a safe space for the person to share their feelings. Avoid asking things like, “you aren’t going to do anything silly, are you?” as this can leave the other person feeling judged and less likely to open up and seek support. Be direct and ask “are you having thoughts about su***de or making plans to end your life?”

Be brave and ask the question 💪….it may just save someone’s life.

Tomorrow I’ll give some guidance on how to respond when someone answers, “yes, I am.”

This Friday 10th September marks World Su***de Prevention Day so each day this week I am sharing some content related to su***de and su***de prevention. Please share this post to ensure it reaches someone who may need some support.

We often hear people talking about people “committing su***de.” This stems from when su***de was a criminal act. This changed in 1961 when it was decriminalised the Su***de Act but the language hasn’t quite caught up yet.

One of the issues with su***de is that people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts often do not want to talk about it as they fear they may be judged, accused of seeking attention or considered to be “crazy.” 😔

We can all help to end the stigma around su***de by talking about it and using the correct, non-judgemental terminology such as “he/she/they attempted su***de; he/she/they must be feeling very low” or “he/she/they died by su***de.”

Words can be powerful; use the right ones to help end the stigma around su***de. 🗣
