What a difference eight months makes
Last December, members of the R K Henshall team rolled up their sleeves and picked up paintbrushes to help a local charity give their new home a new look. Fast forward eight months, and the team were able to see the newly refurbished space in its full glory at the SCB (Supported Community Business) open day.
Many of our team chose SCB for their Everywhen volunteering day because of the incredible work they do for the community. Based in Crewe, SCB helps adults with additional needs to live more independent lives – gaining new skills, new friends, and work experience.
The open day is an important event for the charity, where the whole community is welcome to learn more about the life-changing work that happens there every day. Having played a small part in preparing the building ahead of the move, it was so rewarding to return and see the finished space in action.
We were given a tour by Zach, who showed us all the different stations on the ground floor and explained what tasks were being carried out. Zach was kind enough to let us have a go at one of the activities ourselves, and patiently guided us through the box-building process, so we could make our own.
Throughout the tour, we were continually taken aback by the remarkable transformation. When we volunteered in December, the upper floor was still very much a work in progress. Now, it’s a welcoming social space and lunch area, where trainees can learn new skills, work towards ASDAN qualifications, and spend time together.
We were also treated to a series of presentations given by the trainees. They spoke on a range of subjects they were passionate about, and showed the communication and confidence skills they’ve built at SCB. We learned so much, and their enthusiasm and willingness to step in front of a room full of people was truly inspiring.
It was a real privilege to see the impact SCB has on our community, and the small part we played in making the charity’s new home so welcoming.
As we continue celebrating R K Henshall’s 50th anniversary, we’d like to say a big thank you to SCB for welcoming us back and making our community a better place to live.
