Enquiries to estate agents surge 70% as market reopens: Rightmove

There was a 70 per cent surge in property hunters messaging estate agents via the Rightmove website this morning compared to yesterday following the government’s announcement that viewings and home moves can resume.

Visits to Rightmove were up by 45 per cent earlier today compared to yesterday and 2,115 new properties were added to the site in just five hours.

Rightmove’s housing market expert Miles Shipside says: “These are clear signs that the news from the government has prompted more home-hunters to start looking for their next home, and we anticipate further uplift in activity once agents have time to adjust to the new social distancing guidance specific to the home moving sector.

“Home movers who have been eagerly waiting to take their plans to the next stage should show some patience with agents given the unexpected announcement, to ensure there’s time to adapt to the new guidelines

Restrictions lifted on house moves and viewings

House moves and viewings in England are allowed from today as the government changed guidance imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Measures were introduced to parliament on Tuesday to allow those buying and selling homes and renting to move, an update on advice issued in late March that only house moves to vacant properties be allowed.

Estate and lettings agents can also reopen from today and house viewings are allowed, with strict social distancing rules applied.

Property website Zoopla said that £82bn worth of property transactions were on hold in late April due to restrictions.

Yesterday, it was announced that surveyors could begin physically visiting properties again.

Andrews Property Group chief executive David Westgate says: “Moving home is a highly emotive process and the reignition of the property market on Wednesday will help boost the nation’s spirits.

“Adherence to social distancing and the highest safety standards will be absolutely paramount and all precautions will be taken to protect people viewing property, including through the use of PPE equipment where appropriate.

Did you know the average price of a house in the UK increased by 1.3 per cent to £234,853 over the year in August.

Prices rose by 0.8 per cent from the previous month, according to the Office of National Statistics’s House Price Index, compared with a rise of 0.3 per cent during the same period a year earlier.

However, on a regional basis London saw the slowest growth as prices dropped 1.4 per cent. Only the South East also saw prices fall over the year.

At the country level, the largest annual price growth was recorded in Wales, increasing by 4.5 per cent to £168,318, while Scotland saw house prices increase by 1.6 per cent to £154,549.

The slowest annual growth was in England where prices increased by 1.1 per cent to £251,233.
