Bonds are back in the spotlight. But what does that actually mean for investors?
Bond yields have shifted significantly in recent years, with the 10-year UK gilt yield reaching 5.4% in September, its highest level since 2007.
Higher yields can mean more attractive income potential for new bond investors. But there’s a catch: when yields rise, the value of existing bonds generally falls.
And that’s only part of the story.
The bond market is much broader than government bonds, with investment grade credit, high yield, asset-backed securities, emerging market debt and multi-asset credit all offering different characteristics and risks.
So, whether you’re considering adding bonds to your portfolio or already hold them as part of your investments, understanding how they fit into your wider portfolio is important.
