What would happen if you took a full week off, phone off, starting now?

If the answer makes your stomach drop, your business is running on you. That's exhausting, and it quietly caps how big the business can grow. While it needs you, its growth stops where your stamina does.

If you want to sell one day, it matters even more. A buyer pays more for a business that doesn't fall apart when you walk away.

What's one task you're doing that someone else could do?

Busy isn't the same as profitable.

You probably know what each client pays you. Do you know what each one costs to serve?

Growth feels like success: more clients and higher fees. But if every new client needs more of your team's time, your margin can shrink while your turnover climbs and you are the last to know.

Quick test. Name your most expensive client to serve. Could you back it up with numbers?

In a service business, your biggest cost is your team's time and most systems don't track it.

Do you know your cost to serve?

Do you run a dependency business, or a self-managing one?

In a dependency business, you find out how the year went after it's over. The firm can't run without you, and you’re paid last, out of whatever’s left.

A self-managing business, you can see where the profit is made, and you have time to act if it's under threat. The firm runs to its systems, so your week goes on the work only you can do. You decide what you are paid and the business is built to pay it, and it's worth something to a buyer.

Which one are you running today? And which one do you want?

Today, a little whinge.

I'm an accountant, and the rules I keep up with change constantly. Tax rules, reporting, deadlines, all of it. My clients ask lots of questions about it, rightly, and it's my job to have the answers.

Financial advisers must feel it too. Every change means revisiting the advice you gave last year, while clients ask more and more of you.

When the rules keep moving, how does your firm keep up? Is it one person who reads everything, or something written down that the whole team can use?

07/10/2026

If you had to hand a task to someone else tomorrow, a team member, a contractor, even me, could you?

If the answer is "not really, it's all in my head", that's a systems problem. Without something written down, handing anything over means explaining it from scratch every time, which is often more work than doing it yourself. So it never happens, and you stay stuck holding everything.

A proper system is what makes delegation possible. There are lots of ways to build one now, including AI. I love Loom and Claude.

What do you use to record your processes?

How much of this week have you spent doing the work versus building the business that does the work?

Most of us start out brilliant at what we do, so that's where all our time goes: delivering, fixing, and answering. That only scales as far as your own hours in the day.

Working on the business means stepping back often enough to ask how it runs. When you're not the one holding it together. You don't have to do it all at once or on your own. Start small and take one step at a time.

What's one thing you could change today to buy yourself time back?

Is your business surviving, or built to last?

From the outside they can look the same, a full diary and a steady stream of clients. Underneath, one has systems holding it up. The other has just you, hoping nothing breaks.

This month on the blog and in the Jungle Missive, we're talking about moving from firefighting to proper systems.

At Lednor Accounting HQ, we're still a work in progress. I'm terrible at managing my time and have the diary to prove it! What's the one thing in your business you most need support with? Tell me below.

Three years ago there was nothing here. Just me and an idea. 🌱

Today I'm proud of:

πŸ’ Building Lednor Accounting from nothing
πŸ’ Three years of helping people change their businesses (and lives!) for the better
πŸ’ Hiring Vicky, our first employee
πŸ’ Having the nerve to change direction when something wasn't working
πŸ’ Staying me. Warm, human and jargon-free

It all adds up to one thing: I built something real, on my own terms.

Your turn! What makes you proud of your business? Big or small, drop it below πŸ‘‡ I'd love to celebrate with you.

Did you know... anyone can call themselves an accountant?

Scary. No qualifications needed. No regulator. No insurance required.

Chartered isn't a guarantee of greatness, but it is a guarantee of recourse.

Before you hire someone to look after your money, ask:
βœ… Which professional body are you with?
βœ… Are you insured?
βœ… Are you registered with HMRC as a tax adviser?

A good accountant won't mind you checking. The right one will actually be pleased you did.

Did you know this? Yes or no in the comments πŸ‘‡
