The Budget is two weeks today. The most expensive thing you can do before then is act on a rumour.

Every autumn the headlines fill up with predictions. Pension tax-free cash cut. ISA allowance slashed. Inheritance tax tightened. Some years a few come true. Plenty don't.

The Chancellor delivers the Autumn Budget on Wednesday 28 October, and until then nothing has been announced. Making big, hard-to-reverse decisions based on speculation, such as taking tax-free cash from your pension early just in case, can leave you worse off if the rumour never happens.

What's worth doing instead over the next two weeks:
1. Know your numbers. Roughly what's in your pensions, ISAs and savings, and what your home is worth.
2. Check what you've already used this tax year. Your ISA allowance, pension contributions and any gifts you've made.
3. Write down your questions. Then when the Budget lands, you'll know exactly which announcements matter to you.

Our financial planners Stuart and Iain will be reading the detail on Budget day so you don't have to. If you'd like to talk it through, a free initial consultation is the best place to start.

Pension cannot be access until age 55 (57 from 2028). Investments carry risk. Tax rules can change and their effect depends on your individual circumstances.

Protection built into your mortgage sounds like it's sorted but it's rarely enough on its own and almost nobody points this out.

Many buyers assume that because their lender mentioned life insurance, or because they have death in service through work, they're covered. Death in service typically pays two to four times your salary but it stops the moment you leave that employer and it's rarely designed with your specific mortgage or family costs in mind.

If you were relying on a workplace benefit tied to a job you might not always have, that's worth a second look.

It's not about buying more cover for the sake of it. It's about knowing what you'd actually be left with.

*Life assurance plan typically have no cash in value.

Buying your first home comes with enough to think about without half-true rumours getting in the way. Some of the most common mortgage myths stop people from even starting the process, while others lead to decisions that cost real money.

Here are five of the biggest, and what’s true in 2026.

He had pension pots from four different employers.

He didn't know two of them still existed until we went looking.

It's an easy thing to lose track of. New job, new provider, old paperwork gets filed away and forgotten. Multiply that across a career of ten or eleven jobs - the UK average - and it's not hard to see how 3.3 million pension pots end up lost, worth an estimated £31.1 billion between them (Pensions Policy Institute).

Once we found them, the picture of his actual retirement position looked completely different from what he'd assumed walking in.
Not because he'd done anything wrong. Just because nobody had ever put it all in one place for him before.

Illustrative example based on a client scenario. Pension cannot be access until age 55 (57 from 2028). The value of pensions can go down as well as up. This is not personalised financial advice.

Self-employed or a company director? If you're planning to apply for a mortgage, your 2025/26 tax return now matters.

From 1 October, most lenders will want to see your 2025/26 income figures. If you haven't filed your return yet, your application could be delayed or your choice of lenders limited.

The deadline might not be until 31 January, but if you're hoping to buy, move or remortgage soon, ask your accountant to get it done now.

Chris, Suzanne and Emily help self-employed clients and directors across Reigate and the South East every day. Book your free initial consultation.

The mortgage rate on this morning's headlines? Most people never actually get offered it.

Here's what really decides yours.

The Bank of England base rate sets the general direction, but the rate you're offered comes down to your deposit size, your credit history, your income and how a specific lender assesses affordability on the day you apply. Two applicants with the same income can be offered very different deals depending on their circumstances.

That's why "rates are coming down" isn't the same as "your rate is coming down." The headline is a starting point for the conversation, not the answer to it.

if you've been waiting for a magic number before you start looking, that number was never going to be the full story anyway.
