“So I told the HMRC inspector that I had claimed for the toilet seat. After all he’s just used it so couldn’t argue it, could he?”
I happened to get into a conversation with a gentleman at the check out who commented on the number of bottles of wine I was about to purchase. I explained getting 4 bottles meant I would get one free with there being a 25% offer. He asked if I was an Accountant and then proceeded to tell me what he had got the HMRC inspector to agree to when they looked at his books.
Some things are “grey” areas when claiming business expenses but if you work from home, I wouldn’t be arguing with the tax man about claiming for a toilet seat. If you had an office with a toilet for employees then yes, claim away. It reminded me of a dearly departed client who every year would put in his TV license and every year I would move it back out again and we would have the discussion about he wouldn’t watch tv except his job made him do it as he was a sound man with contracts for the BBC. Somehow, I didn’t think HMRC would see it that way.

23 million people abandon coins

I totally get that, who has cash with them, it’s so much easier to pay with a card or on your phone and with COVID less people want to handle cash. The only time I needed cash recently was for carparking in Cumbria and a takeaway! If you are in business and bank your cash, the bank charges you, and sometimes these charges are more than what the charges are for you to accept card payments. There’s also the added advantage of staff not helping themselves to your cash if all your customers used card payments and I am sure HMRC would be happy too.
BUT will we become a totally cashless society?
