1100 miles over 11 days
Five friends with a passion for cricket have shoehorned their love of the game into an epic cycling challenge to raise money for two charities close to their hearts - The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cancer Research UK. Novice cyclists Sam Gaiger, Jon Weeden, Steve Wells and Mark Colyer, along with the more experienced Tim Richards, will cycle 1100 miles over 11 days, to visit the county grounds of the 18 first class cricket counties across England and Wales.
This unusual cricket/cycling combination is the brainchild of Sam, whose family suffer from cystic fibrosis - a life-limiting condition affecting the lungs and digestive system. His wife, Louise, 12-year-old son, Elliot, and nine-year-old daughter, Sophie, all have the genetic condition and have been his motivation for running four marathons. The most recent of which, in 2018, signalled the end of his running days and the search for a new challenge. Sam’s family, and many of his friends, share his love of cricket and the cycling inspiration came from getting a Peleton exercise bike for family fitness and enjoying the spinning classes so much.
The seed of an idea quickly gathered momentum, to include five ‘core’ riders, with Chris Jack joining for six days and hopefully others joining for a leg or more. The cricket enthusiasts will also use their pedal power to support the vital work of Cancer Research UK, as all have family and friends whose lives have been sadly lost or changed due to cancer.
Starting at Somerset County Cricket Club (Taunton), the cyclists will navigate the first-class cricket counties of Gloucestershire (Bristol), Glamorgan (Cardiff), Worcestershire (Worcester), Warwickshire (Edgbaston), Lancashire (Old Trafford, Manchester), Yorkshire (Headingley, Leeds), Durham (Chester-le-Street), Nottinghamshire (Trent Bridge), Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Middlesex (Lords), Surrey (The Oval), Essex (Chelmsford), Kent (Canterbury), Sussex (Hove),and Hampshire (Southampton), before finishing at the home of cricket… Potterne CC!
