History
The University of Portsmouth Law Society is one of the largest academic societies at the university, with more than 120 members last year. The Society is also the oldest academic society, outdating the Law School itself, which was founded when the University was established in 1992. Membership
The Law Society has a committee of ten members, who exercise a range of roles to ensure the runni
ng of the committee is trouble-free. These members can viewed here. To join the ever-growing Law Society, follow this link to the Student Union webpage (www.upsu.net) where they will process your joining fee (£10), where you will join the distribution list and be contacted regarding all events and competitions. To attend these and compete you must be a member of the Law Society. To vote and run for a committee post in the 2017-2018 election you must be a member of the Law Society. Socials
The society runs many events; social events such as standard nights out, Christmas dinner, hand-in socials and the Annual Law Charity Dinner. These are well-attended and last year a substantial amount of money was raised for British Heart Foundation and Children With Leukemia. Competitions
In addition to the regular socials, we host and attend competitions. These range from client-interviews, negotiations to moots and mock-trials. These are a perfect place to practice and hone your skills, as well as learn in an enjoyable environment. There are prizes for winning such competitions, and we aim to include mini-pupillages with some sponsoring firms as such prizes. Mentoring Scheme
This year we plan to introduce a mentoring scheme, where volunteers from the second and third years will buddy up with a Fresher to provide a helpful system of communication, aiding with queries about being a law student as well as helpful pointers at the discretion of the mentor. This has been a successful scheme at fellow universities and we look to incorporate this into ours; aiding students in difficult times, as well as establishing a family feel to the Society. Can you sponsor or support our society in anyway? We can help expand your brand and help you achieve corporate responsibility in supporting the training of the next generation of lawyers. please email [email protected] for our Sponsorship and Supporters Brochure 2014/2015
