These are just some of the traumatic experiences shared by people who have borrowed from loan sharks in England.
Today, the England Illegal Money Lending Team has published a powerful new report, A Community of Silence. It reveals the fear, shame and isolation many borrowers face - and the gaps that mean some feel they have nowhere else to turn.
We spoke to people who had borrowed from loan sharks but hadn’t reached out for help, to understand why - and what might have made a difference.
Their voices are helping us better understand how to reach and support more people in the future.
