What is classed as a modification for my car insurance?

A modification for car insurance purposes is any change made to the vehicle that is different from the manufacturer's original specifications. This includes any changes or additions that may affect the performance, safety, or value of the car. Some common examples of modifications include:

Changes to the engine, such as adding a turbocharger or nitrous oxide system
Upgrading the exhaust system or changing the air intake
Adding spoilers or body kits
Installing different wheels or tires
Changing the suspension system
Installing a new sound system or other electronics
Adding a roll cage or other safety equipment
It's important to note that even small modifications can have an impact on your car insurance policy, so it's always best to inform your insurance provider of any changes made to your vehicle. Failure to disclose modifications can result in your policy being voided, and may leave you without coverage in the event of an accident.

Useful tech:

When an iPhone is running iOS 11 or later, it has a feature called Emergency SOS that can automatically contact emergency services and designated emergency contacts after an accident.

To activate Emergency SOS, you can press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons on your iPhone. Alternatively, you can quickly press the side button five times in a row. This will bring up an Emergency SOS slider on the screen.

If you slide the Emergency SOS slider to the right, your iPhone will automatically call emergency services in your region. After the call ends, your iPhone will send a message with your location to your emergency contacts, letting them know that you made an emergency call and providing your current location.

You can set up your emergency contacts in the Health app on your iPhone. To do this, open the Health app, tap your profile picture in the top right corner, then tap "Medical ID." From there, tap "Edit" and scroll down to the Emergency Contacts section. You can add up to three emergency contacts, and these contacts will be notified via text message after an Emergency SOS call is made.

Our 3 picks from Parkers Guide of their top 10 most reliable used cars.

For first time drivers, for low cost insurance ... and remember, premiums are lower if you get started on your own as an L driver! ๐Ÿš—

5 - Toyota Aygo
Pros:
โœ… Typically Toyota reliable
โœ… Inexpensive to run, good to drive
Cons:
โŒ Small boot and rear seats
โŒ A bit lost on the motorway

Toyotaโ€™s tiny city car is a great bet if youโ€™re looking for inexpensive, reliable motoring and donโ€™t need much space. As with the mechanically similar Peugeot 107, average repair costs are impressively low, while it also benefits from cheap insurance and running costs.

8 - Suzuki Alto
Pros:
โœ… Cheaper than walking
โœ… Surprisingly fun
Cons:
โŒ Not one for the motorway
โŒ Getting on a bit now

It might have been off sale in the new car market since 2014, but the reliability of the pint-sized Alto remains undimmed all these years on. Itโ€™s a great example of a likeable, indecently cheap-to-run car thatโ€™s also fun to drive. Best of all, thereโ€™s ample used car choice for less than ยฃ2,000 these days. Overlook it at your peril.

10 - Peugeot 107
Pros:
โœ… Great score for small French hatch
โœ… Cheap to run, great to drive
Cons:
โŒ In reality, itโ€™s a two-seater
โŒ It has a lower score than the Toyota Aygo

Very reliable and cheap car, this. Average repair prices are low, as are running costs and insurance premiums. Worth noting that this is mechanically nearly identical to the Toyota Aygo on this list. So if you canโ€™t find a good Aygo near you, the 107 is a solid alternative.

Driving in snow and icy conditions can be a challenging experience for even the most experienced drivers. These weather conditions can cause reduced visibility, slippery roads, and poor traction, making it difficult to control your vehicle. However, with proper preparation and careful driving, you can ensure that you stay safe on the road. In this article, we will provide you with some tips to help you drive safely in snow and icy conditions.

Check Your Vehicle
Before you start your journey, it's essential to check your vehicle to make sure it's in good working order. Check your tires to ensure they have enough tread and are properly inflated. It's also important to check your windshield wipers, defroster, and headlights to ensure they're working correctly. In snowy or icy conditions, you may also want to consider using winter tires or snow chains for better traction.

Plan Your Route
If you're driving in snow or icy conditions, it's important to plan your route carefully. Stick to major roads that are more likely to be plowed and salted. Avoid back roads or shortcuts that may not be cleared or maintained.

Slow Down
Driving too fast in snow or icy conditions can be extremely dangerous. Slow down and leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. It's also important to remember that it takes longer to stop on snowy or icy roads, so be sure to brake gently and avoid sudden movements.

Accelerate and Brake Gradually
When driving in snow or icy conditions, it's important to accelerate and brake gradually. Sudden movements can cause your vehicle to skid or lose traction, making it difficult to control. If your vehicle starts to skid, gently steer into the direction of the skid and avoid slamming on the brakes.

Use Your Lights
In snowy or icy conditions, visibility can be reduced, making it difficult to see other vehicles or obstacles. Use your headlights to improve your visibility, and make sure they're clean and properly aligned. Avoid using high beams in heavy snowfall, as they can reflect off the snow and reduce visibility even further.

Be Prepared
If you're driving in snow or icy conditions, it's important to be prepared for the unexpected. Make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight. Keep your phone charged and carry a charger or power bank with you in case of an emergency.

In conclusion, driving in snow or icy conditions requires caution, patience, and preparation. By following these tips, you can ensure that you stay safe on the road and arrive at your destination without incident. Remember, if you don't feel comfortable driving in these conditions, it's always better to wait until the roads have been cleared or find an alternative mode of transportation.

You may have heard of telematics (or โ€˜black boxโ€™) car insurance. This type of insurance is designed to help careful drivers save money on their premiums.
It works by signing up to a heavily discounted premium in return for agreeing to fit a device to your car which monitors various aspects of your driving.

ยท Do you consider yourself a safe and considerate driver โ€ฆ a โ€˜black boxโ€™ policy will help you prove it and save you money both at the start and at the renewal stage.
ยท If youโ€™re a careful driver but deemed a โ€˜high riskโ€™ due to say a lack of experience or previous conviction, then agreeing to a โ€˜black boxโ€™ policy may mean a more manageable premium.
ยท Are you a younger/less experienced driver but want to drive something a bit bigger than a corsa โ€“ a telematics policy might be right for you.
ยท No curfews.
ยท Start earning no claims bonus on a provisional licence with no penalty when you pass your test.
ยท Ability to track your journeys and scores yourself.
We want to help you get a competitive insurance premium while being rewarded for showing consistently safe and considerate driving behaviours.
We want to help keep you on the road not take you off it.
