It’s Diabetes Awareness Week, focusing on “Strike Out the Stigma.” Diabetes stigma involves negative attitudes and misconceptions about individuals with diabetes, affecting all types of the condition. Nearly half of those surveyed internalise these stereotypes, leading to shame and increased symptoms of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Eight in ten individuals with diabetes report facing negative attitudes, which can occur from family, colleagues, and even in healthcare settings. This stigma prevents individuals from seeking necessary support, disclosing their condition to employers, and attending healthcare appointments. Additionally, it can result in higher blood sugar levels and reduced quality of care.
