An estimated 3.3 million pension pots are currently classed as lost in the UK, holding around £31.1 billion between them. The average lost pot for someone aged 55 to 75 is worth around £13,620.

Start with what you have. Gather any statements still arriving, even from providers you barely recognise. Contact former employers directly. Use the government's Pension Tracing Service for older or harder-to-find schemes.

The Pensions Dashboard is being rolled out, with providers required to connect by 31 October 2026. Once live, it will show all your pensions in one place - including the State Pension.

But finding them is only the first step. What each pot costs, how it's invested, and whether any of it carries guarantees worth protecting - that's where the real work begins.

Most British expats leaving France focus on the logistics. The removal van. The property sale. The final French tax return.

What they often don't plan for is the sequence - and in this case, the sequence is everything.

France applies exit tax the day you leave.

Assurance vie contracts that were tax-efficient in France become chargeable events the moment you become UK resident, with gains potentially taxable at up to 45%.

French forced heirship rules that mandated how your estate passed in France don't disappear - they sit in conflict with your UK will until someone deliberately resolves that tension.

And the UK's new four-year Foreign Income and Gains regime only protects returning expats who've been non-UK resident for at least 10 consecutive years - a threshold more people miss than expect.
