The new retirement dilemma: preserve or spend your pension.

Most unused pension assets will be included in an estate for inheritance tax purposes from 6 April 2027.

The rule change means many families will need to review their retirement income and estate planning strategies.

Most pensions can be accessed from age 55 (rising to 57 from 2028).

Autumn Budget 2025 - Headlines:

Salary sacrifice - Charging National Insurance on salary-sacrificed pension contributions over £2,000, but only coming into force in 2029.

‘Wealth taxes’ - Increasing the tax rates on property, dividends and savings income by 2% (but only for the basic and higher rate bands on dividends).

ISA reform - Reduction in the Cash ISA allowance to £12,000 in 2027 whilst those over 65 will keep their full £20,000 cash allowance.

Income tax threshold freeze - Income tax and National Insurance Contributions thresholds have been frozen for three years from 2028-29.

Inheritance tax - the £1m allowance for the 100% rate of agricultural property relief and business property relief will be transferable between spouses and civil partners.

Council tax - Surcharge on properties worth over £2m from 2028.
