VIP Visit to Peterhead Fish Market

We were delighted to welcome Katrina Farquhar, Private Secretary to Their Majesties The King and Queen, to Peterhead Fish Market with incredible support from Peterhead Port Authority.

From walking the auction floor to witnessing the final days of the shout auction, Ms Farquhar experienced firsthand the energy, pace and professionalism that have defined this market for generations.

We also discussed the opportunities and challenges facing Scotland’s seafood sector - from today’s realities to tomorrow’s ambitions.

It was a true privilege to share our story, our people, and our passion for Scottish seafood.

From sea to plate - representing the full supply chain.

SSA represents processors, exporters and the wider seafood supply chain that sustains Scotland’s coastal communities.

When funding uncertainty, regulatory complexity or trade friction arise, our responsibility is to ensure those impacts are understood where decisions are made.

We believe Scotland’s seafood sector deserves:
- Clarity
- Fairness
- Long-term strategic support

And we will continue to advocate for all three - nationally and internationally.

Advocating across political lines

The seafood sector cannot afford to be caught between political positions.

SSA engages constructively with representatives across parties and governments to ensure Scotland’s seafood businesses have a strong, informed and consistent voice in national discussions.

Investment confidence, growth and coastal employment all depend on stable, clear and supportive policy.

Our commitment is long-term because the challenges facing our sector do not sit within a single parliamentary term.

A proven ladder to career success

It is Scottish Apprenticeship Week (2 to 6 March 2026) and we are celebrating how an apprenticeship provides a vital foundation for a lifelong career.

The food and drink sector is one of the most rewarding industries to join: it is secure, diverse and full of opportunities to make a real difference.

Apprenticeship is not just a first job, but a ladder that can take you all the way to the boardroom. Check out this journey within the seafood sector to see how you can .

Protecting export flow and operational reality

Trade policy only works if it works in practice.

From border delays to IUU labelling requirements, Scotland’s seafood exporters face real-world pressures that require practical solutions not just policy statements.

The SSA engages directly with government departments to ensure the operational realities of processors and exporters shape decision-making.

Our role is simple: protect trade flow, reduce friction and keep Scottish seafood competitive at home and abroad.

Ensuring Scotland’s seafood sector is treated fairly

Scotland lands over 60% of the UK’s fish - yet received just 7.8% of the £360m Coastal Communities Growth Fund.

The Scottish Seafood Association exists to ensure decisions like these are challenged, scrutinised and properly understood.

When funding allocations impact investment, jobs and long-term growth in our coastal communities, SSA works to secure clarity, transparency and fairness for the businesses that power our seafood supply chain.

Advocacy matters and representation at the highest levels makes a difference.
