My uninteresting, unfiltered, real life this week.

It’s been a pretty tough week in small business owner land- we’ve had laser cutter issues, storage problems and, in true Emma-style, it’s been one of our busiest weeks in years so of course I’ve had to take time out to go to physio and get my car fixed 🤦‍♀️

But in more positive news, I’ve almost finished working on our brand new 2027 diary, and I’m SO excited to share it with you! I’ve created every page myself, so it’s got exactly what I want on it, because I find that the generic pre-made versions are never quite right. Oh, and it’s really pretty!

If you have any strong views on what needs to go in a diary but is never included, now is your chance to let me know so I can add it- drop me a message or let me know in the comments.

If you’re new here, hi! 👋 I’m Emma- a small business owner, card and stationery designer, mama and chaos-coordinator. I’m here to share real life stories about small business life, because I’m so over everyone pretending everything is Instagram perfect. If you love stationery, thoughtful cards and real humans making real human art, this is the account for you, my friend!

18 years of experimenting and failing and trying again.

Our product photography has been a journey, to say the least, but I think I’ve finally found something that almost resembles something that works.

This is the problem with running a small business- we can’t just employ a photographer or marketing team, so I have had to learn by doing (and failing)

If you’re new here, hi! 👋 I’m Emma- a small business owner who is learning on the job. In all honesty, I’m completely winging it, and have been for 18 years. I’m sick of pretending I have my sh*t together and I’m sharing real life on here now, because Instagram should be about connection and real life stuff, not a picture perfect showcase of the best bits.

If you love small businesses, thoughtful greetings cards and all things paper, then please do say hello! I’d love it if you stuck around 🤗

I’m looking for real people to follow. I want real life behind the scenes content, messy, non-aesthetic work spaces, imperfect work in progress shots, unfiltered real human people doing real human things, and let’s not forget cute pics of dogs.

I’m bored of pretending to be a big brand and post curated, professionally-shot content.

I’m a real person making real art, I don’t have a huge marketing budget, investors, photography department or perfectly pastel pretty workspace.

My desk has doom piles.
My studio is not beautifully decorated.
My body isn’t insta-perfect.

I just want to start using Instagram to be social and unfiltered and real again.

Hi! 👋. I’m Emma, a small business owner from Cornwall. I make laser cut greeting cards and pretty stationery from my very ordinary workshop near Falmouth. If you are a real person and want to join me, I’d really like that. Let me know in the comments if you want to be friends!

That’s why.

As a maker, it can feel like a bit of a kick in the teeth when people say things like this.

Sure, you could get a card for 25p when you pick up your groceries.

But, let’s face it- it’s not gonna win any awards for the most thoughtful gesture. It ain’t gonna be remembered (or kept) past the event, and it definitely doesn’t scream “I put lots of thought and effort into to choosing the perfect card for you”

Don’t get me wrong, the cheaper cards can sometimes have their place, but if it’s one of your most favourite people and they are celebrating a big moment- that’s what our cards are for.

We make cards for the big moments for your favourite people.

Take a peek inside my DMs 👀

If you’re new here, hi! 👋 I’m Emma, a small business owner with an unhealthy obsession with paper. I can mostly be found making laser cut cards and whimsical stationery, drinking copious amounts of coffee and trying to break my doom scrolling habit by distracting myself with crafting and journaling.

If you’re looking for real human content created by a chaotic, clumsy, freshly diagnosed ADHDer who has been winging small business life for almost 18 years and is somehow still going…Welcome! It’s so nice to meet you! Be sure to hit follow if this sounds like your jam x

Daily reminder

I’ll just leave this here for anyone who needs to see this. As always, feel free to share!

Happy Bank Holiday Monday, all!

If you’re new here, hi 👋. I’m Emma, a small business owner with a fresh diagnosis of ADHD and a serious case of burnout. I’ve made laser cut cards for 18 years now (people say they’re quite good- check them out for yourself if you like). I’m on a new side quest to slow down and live a more meaningful life, reduce my screen time and find some peace. This side quest has led to a second side quest (hello, ADHD!) where I’ve also launched my own stationery range, but that’s a story for another day.

Be sure to stick around if this all sounds like your jam, It’s so nice to meet you!

I went viral a few times with 1M, 4M and 3.3M views on reels.

And honestly? One star. Would not recommend.

The thing is, the pressure to do it again is immense. It becomes this all-consuming thing. You stop enjoying creating content and start feeling like you have to perform.

I’m over it.

I just want to draw my little doodles, make cards and stationery that make people smile and engage with lovely people on social media.

So if you like pretty personalised cards and thoughtful gifts, and you can’t be arsed with lip syncing and dancing and trends, I’d love it if we could be friends.

Note to self- you’re doing ok, chill your boots.

18 years of making cards and I still catch the old self-doubt and imposter syndrome creeping in.

Running a small business is savage.

Sometimes it feels like performing open-heart surgery on yourself using a YouTube tutorial, while trying to convince the patient—who is also you—that you have a medical degree from Harvard.

Must try to focus on the positive stuff. And this month there have been quite a few positives 🤗

Don’t let the pretty pastel photos of perfect craft rooms fool you!

This is what running a creative small business REALLY looks like.

It’s more doom-piles, half-drunk coffee cups, admin and anxiety than rows of pretty colourful papers stored perfectly in rainbow-order.

“A place for everything and everything in its place” …ha! 😂

The reality is that when you’re a small business paying rent on a workshop, you’ve almost definitely outgrown the space before you unpack (IYKYK 😬), so if something stays in one place for long enough, it becomes a place to store other things on top of it. Sometimes you gotta move 10 things just to make room to put something down.

I’d love to have an insta-perfect setup, but, unfortunately, running a business gets in the way of that. If I had time to curate a perfect space for content, I’d be worrying where the orders had gone.

If you’re new here, hi! 👋 I’m Emma, a small business owner who makes really pretty cards and stationery, but has a really messy workshop. I’m here to de-influence you, and share some of the real, human, messy side of small business life. I’m bored of following the Instagram rules and showing perfectly curated content of my “perfect” small business life. Because running a small business is savage, brutal, hard work. It’s not pretty 😂

If you like greetings cards, snail mail, stationery and gifts, but want to see real human content and art and genuine, honest behind the scenes from my studio, be sure to hit follow and stick around x

I am OBSESSED 🤩

Vintage greetings cards are my new favourite thing.

I think the thing I’m loving the most is the printed verses inside them- some are seriously questionable, some are utterly charming, and some are just awful, but I think that just makes them even more lovely.

Isn’t it wonderful that these folded pieces of card have been kept for decades because they meant so much to the recipient?

Ps. This totally counts as “research”, and is therefore completely tax-deductible, right?! 🤞
