A wonderful evening at the Beyond Futures Festival of Research and Innovation.

A recent client story.

A client came to us with savings spread across a number of different accounts. Interest rates were relatively poor, ISA allowances hadn’t been fully utilised and, most importantly, there wasn’t really a plan for what the money was there to achieve.

We started by looking at the bigger picture.

How much should remain accessible for emergencies? What might be needed over the next few years? And what could be put aside for the longer term to potentially supplement pension income and pay for some of life’s luxuries?

From there, we made use of available tax free allowances, invested longer term money in a portfolio aligned to their feelings around risk and reward, and gave each pot of money a clear purpose.

They now have a plan for today, the future and the things they want to enjoy along the way, with regular reviews pencilled in to keep everything on track.

Sometimes good financial planning is simply about giving your money a purpose.

Finding that sweet spot between work and life can feel like trying to balance on a tightrope while juggling coffee and deadlines.

We all know the drill: deadlines looming, emails piling up, and suddenly, you remember there's a life outside the office! So how do you pull it all together?

Here’s my little secret: I schedule ‘personal time’ just like I would a team meeting. Whether it’s a walk with Emma, a quick trip to the coffee shop, or practising my golf swing, those breaks are essential. They recharge my batteries and keep my creativity flowing.

The challenge is making space for those moments. It's about protecting your downtime as fiercely as you protect work deadlines.

After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup! Refreshing your mind has a ripple effect on your work.

A good reminder to check your State Pension.

I see lots of people who have never checked their State Pension forecast or National Insurance record, and occasionally people are surprised to find they have missing years.

It’s worth checking well before retirement to understand what you’re currently on track to receive and whether there are any gaps in your National Insurance record that could affect your entitlement.

It only takes a few minutes to check, but it’s an important part of planning for retirement.
