Medenta Business Development Manager, Andy Thomas, addresses some of the myths around offering dental patient finance and shows how it benefits patients.

Myth: "Finance is only for expensive treatments."

Truth: Patients use finance for a huge range of treatments, including teeth whitening and everyday restorative dentistry. Your patients' circumstances will differ widely: what one might see as manageable could feel overwhelming for another.

You don't need to decide which treatments "deserve" finance. Offer the information consistently and let patients choose what suits them.

How to attract more patients to your dental practice - part 1

To remain profitable, dental practices need to keep attracting new patients. The best ways to attract new patients will depend on your practice's individual circumstances. Different practices will have varying needs. However, there are some fundamental things it's important to get right to give you the best chance of increasing your patient numbers.

Here are a few suggestions to consider...

Evaluate your signage: Evaluate your current signage by taking a step back and putting yourself in the position of someone approaching your practice for the first time. Is your signage visible and noticeable to anyone passing by? Not only that, does it convey the type of practice you are?

Try storytelling: Social media is an important way to let people know the sort of practice you are and the services you provide. As well as showcasing how you've helped your patients achieve the smile they've always wanted, tell stories about your charity work, staff achievements and milestones so people get to see who they'll be interacting with.

Finance myth #2

Medenta Business Development Manager, Andy Thomas, addresses some of the myths around offering dental patient finance and shows how it benefits patients.

Myth: "Patients will be offended if I bring up finance."

Truth: Most patients appreciate being shown different options. Rather than being about assumptions, finance is about flexibility. Talking about finance makes no judgment about your patient's ability to pay. It simply lets them know they don't have to pay all at once.

Presenting the option using a neutral phrase, such as: "Lots of patients choose to spread the cost monthly if it helps", feels supportive rather than intrusive.

Finance myth #1

Medenta Business Development Manager, Andy Thomas, addresses some of the myths around offering dental patient finance and shows how it benefits patients.

Myth: "Talking about finance feels pushy."

Truth: Patients see finance as helpful, not a source of pressure. We pay for many high value purchases monthly, such as phones and furniture, so spreading the cost of dental treatment feels normal and reassuring. In this case, talking about finance is about removing barriers rather than selling.

When it's positioned as part of informed consent ("here are all your options"), it becomes a natural part of your clinical and administrative communication.

Important update for practices offering Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options.

From July 15th, in-house Deferred Payment Credit (DPC) arrangements will become regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

This means:
- In-house deferred payment schemes can no longer be offered unless they meet the new regulatory requirements.
- Eligible agreements may fall under FCA regulation and have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
- Any disclosures and documentation must be fully compliant with FCA requirements.
- The changes are designed to strengthen consumer protection and promote the responsible use of BNPL products.

If your practice currently offers an in-house BNPL option, it's important to understand what these changes mean.

Are you prepared for the annual due diligence review?

As part of our ongoing support, we carry out an annual review to help ensure your practice remains up to date with Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) requirements and your contractual obligations.

Once we've been in touch, you'll have a set timeframe to provide the required information. If this isn't completed, your finance facilities may need to be temporarily suspended until everything is up to date.

To help you prepare, we've put together a handy guide on the Resource and Learning Hub outlining what you'll need before your review. Take a look and make sure you have everything ready.
