Before regular ferries, road trips, and trains, Oban was already welcoming travellers (The picture is the Iona at Rothesay)

When steamships began sailing Scotland’s west coast in the early 1800s, they transformed this small coastal settlement into one of the country’s most fashionable Victorian resorts. Visitors arrived by sea, promenaded along the bay, and used Oban as the starting point for journeys deeper into the Highlands.

It was this steady flow of arrivals, departures, and connections that earned Oban its nickname — the “Charing Cross of the Highlands".

Today, that same sense of anticipation still fills the harbour. Ferries come and go, island stories meet on the pier, and visitors continue to begin their west coast adventures.

We often hear this question: “What if the weather is bad?”

Oban was never designed around perfect sunshine. Rainy days mean:

• Long seafood lunches or cafe brunches
• Distillery visits
• Wandering through Dunollie or Dunstaffnage heritage walls
• Watching ferries come and go
• Coastal walks between showers

Scottish trips aren’t about avoiding weather — they’re about planning around it.

Whats your favourite way to spend an Oban rainy day?

🚢 175 years of connecting Scotland’s coastlines and communities

Today, we’re proud to join Caledonian MacBrayne in celebrating an extraordinary milestone — 175 years of serving Scotland.

From the very first sailing of Hutcheson & Co. in 1851 to today’s lifeline ferry services across the west coast and islands, CalMac has long been at the heart of places like Oban and the communities they serve.

Have you got a favourite CalMac memory — a crossing to the Isles, a holiday adventure, or a homecoming voyage? Share it with us below 👇

Here’s to the people, the places, and the journeys — past, present, and still to come.

If you’re planning a trip to Oban in February, imagine this:

A quiet harbour morning. Ferries are easing out to begin their day. Café lights flicker on while the town wakes up slowly.

February in Oban isn’t about ticking things off a list. It’s about space — to walk, to notice, to enjoy the town as it actually is.

The weather changes its mind. Some places keep shorter hours. Planning ahead, a flexible schedule and a good coat are all that's needed for a quiet winter break.

👉 Start your planning on the Love Oban website — it’s all there when you’re ready. https://www.oban.org.uk/
