Waiting For Lower Rates? Today's Bank of England Vote May Change That!

The Bank of England has held Base Rate at 3.75%.

But that's not the most important part of today's announcement.

The Monetary Policy Committee voted:
⇨ 6 to hold rates
⇨ 3 to increase rates
⇨ 0 to cut rates

For farming businesses, rural property buyers and landowners planning investment, that matters.

Many borrowers have been expecting interest rates to move gradually lower. Today's vote suggests the debate inside the Bank is becoming less about when rates will be cut and more about whether inflation risks could keep rates higher for longer. The Bank continues to see inflation risks tilted to the upside.

If you're considering:

• Farm expansion finance
• Land purchases
• Agricultural mortgages
• Diversification projects
• Machinery and equipment funding
• Rural property refinancing

now may be a sensible time to review your options rather than relying on lower rates arriving later this year.

Nobody knows where rates will be in six weeks' time.

What we do know is that today's vote wasn't pointing towards cuts.

The headline says rates were held.

➡ The vote says don't rule out a rise.

Farming doesn't run on neat monthly cycles

Starting out on a dairy farm, long before working in finance, that experience still shapes how Finance for Agriculture approaches farm finance today, focused on seasonal cash flow, long investment cycles, and the realities of running a farming business.

Independent advice. No jargon. No pressure

As many know I started my career working for an agricultural merchant in Northumberland and I'm one of the few commercial finance brokers that can plough, albeit badly now!

Through our Tax Reclaims brand we can now work with farmers to support with Farm R&D Tax Relief in addition to providing great finance deals on tractors and even combine harvesters.

Although I can drive a combine, I'd rather give you the key. Why not take a look to see how I can best support you.

Wattsford Commercial Finance, our commercial finance arm, has released an interesting post on today's interest rate hike by the Bank of England.

The Bank of England has today raised the base rate to 1.25%.
Although this continues to remain historically low, it would appear that interest rates will continue to climb as the Bank tries to reign in inflation which is now predicted to be circa the 11% mark by October.
What does this mean for landlords and commercial property owners, those that are on a fixed rate now are protected for the time being.
If you're on a variable rate or are coming towards the end of a fixed term, it may be prudent to review your options now. At Wattsford Commercial Finance, we've made this as easy as possible with our Indicative Rates Request forms.
No one knows where interest rates will be by the end of the year, save to say that if interest rates continue to climb at 0.25% per month, we'll be looking at a base rate of 2.75%. On the bright side back in 2007, the base rate was circa 5.5%.
