Award-Winning Industrial Design and Engineering Consultancy based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

As an Industrial design consultancy, E3 Design have a passion for user driven design and believe our key offering is our ability to implement our technical knowledge early into the design process. This strengthens our initial design proposals, giving the products we design the best possible chance to make it to market with the original vision intact. We have an innovative and creative design team with a proven record of delivering products. Our designers have specialist skills in product/industrial design and development, with particular skills in design for plastic injection moulding and high volume manufacture. Additionally we have developed specialist design skills in plastic mechanisms and drinking fluid dispensing applications

Our team is currently 6 full-time design employees, not including admin staff, students or the financial director. While all our designers have their own particular skills and strengths, all are very capable throughout our process from concept generation through to DFM. E3design has a wealth of experience in Consumer Product, Structural Packaging, Medical, Lighting, Industrial, DFM and even Fashion, this variety of experience allows us to better inform all of our work while still maintaining fresh and creative ideas.

E3design at CTS 2026 – Silverstone

Our Technical Director, Peter Angus, attended the CTS Show at Silverstone last Thursday, exploring some of the latest developments in engineering, manufacturing and rapid prototyping.

One of the highlights was meeting Nigel Morsman from Hadleigh Castings, specialists in single and low-volume aluminium sand castings.

Of particular interest was their use of 3D-printed sand moulds and cores, allowing complex aluminium castings to be produced directly from CAD data without the need for traditional pattern tooling. The impressive range of engine components and manifolds on display demonstrated the possibilities this technology offers for rapid prototyping and low-volume manufacturing.

Peter also visited Paragon Rapid Prototyping, along with several other exhibitors showcasing innovative manufacturing processes and technologies.

And, of course, being at Silverstone, there were some rather special cars on display, including an Aston Martin racing car, a Toyota Corolla touring car, the Pikes Peak Golf GTI and the extraordinary McMurtry Spéirling.

There was also an opportunity to take in the view over Silverstone's famous start/finish straight.

With over 40 years of engineering experience, Peter remains passionate about developments in design and manufacturing. Events like CTS provide an excellent opportunity to discover new processes, exchange ideas and explore technologies that could benefit our customers.

At E3design, continuous learning and embracing new manufacturing technologies remain central to our approach to design, development and cost engineering.

The importance of confidentiality

DFM (Design for Manufacture) is exactly what it says it is. It’s our rigorous process of making sure concepts and innovations can be manufactured, assembled, sold and used successfully.

Having a time-served toolmaker on site means we consider the practicalities of manufacture throughout the design process. From material selection, manufacturing processes and tolerances to tooling, assembly and production costs. This hands-on experience is what makes the difference for our customers.

DFM is one of the most important stages of the design process, helping to identify potential issues early and ensuring a product is designed not just to work, but to be made efficiently and consistently.

With every customer, we guide them through this process, educating and upskilling them so that, when the time comes, they can speak to their supply base with a solid understanding of the manufacturing and product release stages.

The concept for the Lifesaver Bottle was born out of the tragic loss of life and serious issues caused by the lack of safe drinking water following the Tsunami in December 2004 and subsequently Hurricane Katrina the following year.

LifeSaver entrusted E3Design with transforming the product from a bench rig into a consumer-ready production solution.

The requirements were clear: the bottle had to be simple, portable, robust, pressure-tight and serviceable.
The result was the world’s first all-in-one ultra-filtration water bottle capable of removing waterborne pathogens.

E3Design designed all of the plastic components, working closely with a local injection moulding company to develop a comprehensive manufacturing solution.

This was a challenging product to design. It needed to perform reliably in demanding environments while also being practical to manufacture, assemble and maintain.

The principles established through this project went on to influence our subsequent work with Lifesaver Systems, including the Lifesaver Jerrycan.

A great example of how industrial design can take an early technical concept and turn it into a robust, production-ready product with a real purpose.

What a week last week!

Design in Everything was great. Thanks so much for the team at Edge for bringing it all together. It can't have been an easy feat.

What did we do?

Well...

Monday - Elizabeth and Hannah exhibited at the Newcastle Showcase at the Biscuit Factory. It was great to be amongst other Newcastle designers.

Hannah and Lizzie attended "Inclusive Design: How Do We Do It Well?" Workshop where they gained some great insights which they plan to take forward into their work.

Later in the day Marc, Becca and Elizabeth attended "Celebrating Design in Everything" Keynote session at Northumbria University. Again an eye opening event with some great local talent.

Tuesday - Peter attended the Showcase at Morpeth Town Hall. Another great reminder of the amazing things happening in Northumberland.

Later Marc and Becca attended Beth's Design Talk on Design in Health and Care. She did amazingly well, as did her fellow speakers.

Wednesday - Marc took part in the "Selling Design" talk at Durham County Cricket Club. He had the opportunity to share with everyone how E3Design has managed to thrive over the last 20 years and maintain relationships with customers and our network.

Thursday - Marc and Becca attended the "Big Design Social" at St Mary's By the Tyne (a place that holds special memories of their wedding) They enjoyed some fabulous entertainment from Terry and co. As well as some well earned street food and of course, networking.

Friday - Lizzie and Becca attended the Gateshead Showcase at Gateshead College. It was wonderful to see some familiar faces as well as meet some new local businesses and talent. Not only that, they had the opportunity to speak to students about their potential future careers in the creative industry.

Thanks to Simon, Susan and Ellie for a brilliant event. Thank you to the North East Combined Authority for supporting Design in the North East, long may it continue! Although we're worn out, we're really looking forward to what next year brings.

A new product shouldn’t just fit into an existing range, it should build on it and sometimes that means more than following established guidelines. For the vast majority of companies, it can mean refreshing the brand identity entirely or consolidating existing products into a clearer, more coherent design language. Whether we’re working within a well‑defined system or helping create a new one, the goal is always the same: clarity, recognisability and a seamless user experience.

Strong product families make life easier for users and engineers. Shared visual cues reduce cognitive load. Familiar mechanisms shorten learning curves. Repeatable interfaces and common components streamline manufacturing and create efficiencies that scale.

This is something we’ve spent over 20 years doing at E3Design. Working with multinational brands to early‑stage startups has taught us how to review an existing catalogue, extract or rebuild the underlying design language, identify mechanical patterns and create a framework that future products can follow confidently. It’s a structured, collaborative process that helps companies grow without losing the identity they’ve worked hard to build.

A well‑defined product family becomes a strategic asset, one that supports expansion, strengthens brand recognition and ensures every new product feels like part of a purposeful, unified story.
