I truly do value all my clients. Clients are putting a lot of trust in someone when writing their Will: trust because they are telling you about personal and financial situations; trust that you can advise you on the most appropriate course of action; trust that the documents you produce do what they say. It is really important to me that I understand my clients, listen to what they say (and sometimes what they do not say) to ensure that my advice is complete, impartial and useful.

I had it again last week. ‘I don’t need a Will, I haven’t got anything to leave. It’s just me and my son.’

This is when my tummy does a nervous flip. How old is your son?
‘7.’
And who will look after him if you die?
‘Well I’ve spoken to my sister and she’s happy to.’
But it’s not legally down, in your Will. And if it’s not in your Will, social services will decide. And they may choose your sister, of course. But they may not. And quite frankly, as a mum, there is nothing that makes me quite as sick as the thought of social services deciding where my child may live, and having charge, even for 5 minutes.
So write a Will, get guardians put in place and allow my tummy to rest from its anxious knots.

💡 Don’t Leave Your Future to Chance: Wills vs. LPA
I was watching Martin Lewis last night, and he dropped a massive wake-up call that we all need to hear. If you think you're sorted just because you have a Will, think again!

Here is the quick breakdown of what he said and why it matters now:

📜 The Will: For when you're gone
A Will is your voice after you pass away. It ensures your money, property, and possessions go to the people you choose. It also reduces probate time.

Without one: The government (Intestacy laws) decides who gets what—and it’s rarely what you’d want, plus the whole thing can take longer for everyone left behind in an already stressful time.

🛡️ Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA): For while you're here.
This is the one Martin says is arguably more important than a Will. An LPA gives someone you trust the legal authority to look after your affairs if you lose "mental capacity" (due to an accident, stroke, or dementia - and a reminder, you can lose capacity at any age).

The Myth: "My spouse/kids can just step in."

The Reality: They cannot automatically access your bank accounts or make medical decisions without this legal document. Without it, your family has to go through a long, expensive, and stressful court process.

🔑 The Bottom Line
A Will protects your legacy.

An LPA protects you while you’re still alive.

Martin’s advice? Get both. It’s not about being morbid; it’s about being prepared and making things easier for the people you love.

You know who to come to if you need either right?

Post 6 – Trusts Are About Flexibility, Not Distrust

One misconception I hear often is that trusts are about mistrust.

In reality, they’re about flexibility.

Life changes.
Circumstances shift.
Children grow up differently than expected.

A discretionary Will trust allows decisions to be made based on what’s right at the time — by people you’ve chosen and trust.

For families who want that extra layer of protection, it can be a very practical option.

Post 5 – Case Study: Wanting Protection, Not Just Inheritance

A parent I spoke to was clear about one thing:
“I want my children to be provided for — but I don’t want money handed over too early or without guidance.”

They weren’t worried about wealth.
They were thinking about responsibility, timing, and protection.

By using a discretionary Will trust, they were able to put a structure in place that allowed flexibility — while still keeping control over how their estate could be used to support their children.

For many families, that reassurance matters just as much as the Will itself.

Never underestimate the power of reviews, especially when they’re not asked for. If you can give a small business or someone self-employed a review, it really does go a long way (and gives an internal glow to said recipient!).

Two more lovely reviews. THAT is the best part of the job: knowing I have helped someone through talking about topics that are not always easy to talk about; helped them understand and feel in a more empowered position, and most importantly, happy. I’ll take that every time.

What a lovely busy day. A bit of networking with NECC this morning, in the beautiful old fire station, now bar that has been stunningly updated as part of Gotham Hotel.

Then drop in advice at the Toffee Factory. I always love it here; such a warm welcome and a great location in the Ouseburn.

All this after a non-stop drop in advice session at Gateshead council, offering all employees a free basic Will. Phew!

So, more advice dispensed and connections created…happy days.
