Careers can end in a moment. Illness, injury, burnout, it doesnโ€™t matter how hard you work or how fit you are.

As a self-employed parent, if your income stops, everyone feels it. The mortgage. The children. The weekly shop.

Thatโ€™s why I bang on about income protection all the time.
Itโ€™s how you keep the lights on, the food coming, and the stress off your family.

Most people donโ€™t realise you can cover up to 80% of your income - paid monthly, like a salary, until youโ€™re well enough to work again.

Iโ€™m a retired athlete turned financial adviser, sharing honest financial education to help self-employed parents get protection right. Follow along ๐Ÿ™‚

The NHS is incredible.

We are very lucky to have it!

But the reality right now is that waiting lists are the longest theyโ€™ve ever been.

For many people thatโ€™s frustrating.

For someone who is self-employed with a family, it can be much bigger than that.

If youโ€™re waiting months for treatment, you may also be waiting months to get back to work.

Thatโ€™s why more self employed families are starting to look at private medical insurance.

Not to replace the NHS.

Just to have another option if you need it.

And hereโ€™s something most self-employed people donโ€™t realiseโ€ฆ

Taking out a private health policy through your business, rather than personally, can work out significantly cheaper.

It can also cover your whole family, not just you.
But, it must be set up correctly๐Ÿ‘‡

Some say life begins at 24 weeks. The best critical illness policies do too.

The right policy will cover your baby from 24 weeks in the womb.

Others? They wonโ€™t pay a childrenโ€™s claim until your little one is at least 30 days old.

Thatโ€™s the same product, critical illness cover, with a completely different level of protection depending on who youโ€™re with.

And most people have no idea which camp their policy falls into.

This isnโ€™t about finding the cheapest cover.
Itโ€™s about finding the right cover, because when it matters, the difference between providers isnโ€™t small print. Itโ€™s everything.

Drop โ€œBABYโ€ in the DMs. Iโ€™ll check what your policy actually covers for your children, no jargon, no sales pitch, just a straight answer.

Most people just pick the cheapest option. Hereโ€™s what theyโ€™re actually choosing between. ๐Ÿ‘‡

When you take out life insurance or critical illness cover, your sum assured can do one of three things over time:

๐Ÿ“‰ Decrease
the payout reduces each year, usually in line with a repayment mortgage. Cheaper, but your cover shrinks as you get older.

โžก๏ธ Level
the payout stays fixed. Simple.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Increase
the payout rises each year in line with inflation. The value stays protected.

All three options can be suitable depending on your situation.

The key thing is simply knowing which one you have, and why.

If youโ€™re not sure whatโ€™s in place, itโ€™s worth checking.

Stress
Anxiety
Burnout

And thatโ€™s just breakfast with 3 children ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

But seriously, the key takeaway is:
You donโ€™t need to be critically ill.
You just need to be unable to earn.

If youโ€™re a parent relying on your income, that difference matters.
