Careers can end in a moment. Illness, injury, burnout, it doesn’t matter how hard you work or how fit you are.

As a self-employed parent, if your income stops, everyone feels it. The mortgage. The children. The weekly shop.

That’s why I bang on about income protection all the time.
It’s how you keep the lights on, the food coming, and the stress off your family.

Most people don’t realise you can cover up to 80% of your income - paid monthly, like a salary, until you’re well enough to work again.

I’m a retired athlete turned financial adviser, sharing honest financial education to help self-employed parents get protection right. Follow along 🙂

The NHS is incredible.

We are very lucky to have it!

But the reality right now is that waiting lists are the longest they’ve ever been.

For many people that’s frustrating.

For someone who is self-employed with a family, it can be much bigger than that.

If you’re waiting months for treatment, you may also be waiting months to get back to work.

That’s why more self employed families are starting to look at private medical insurance.

Not to replace the NHS.

Just to have another option if you need it.

And here’s something most self-employed people don’t realise…

Taking out a private health policy through your business, rather than personally, can work out significantly cheaper.

It can also cover your whole family, not just you.
But, it must be set up correctly👇

Some say life begins at 24 weeks. The best critical illness policies do too.

The right policy will cover your baby from 24 weeks in the womb.

Others? They won’t pay a children’s claim until your little one is at least 30 days old.

That’s the same product, critical illness cover, with a completely different level of protection depending on who you’re with.

And most people have no idea which camp their policy falls into.

This isn’t about finding the cheapest cover.
It’s about finding the right cover, because when it matters, the difference between providers isn’t small print. It’s everything.

Drop “BABY” in the DMs. I’ll check what your policy actually covers for your children, no jargon, no sales pitch, just a straight answer.

Most people just pick the cheapest option. Here’s what they’re actually choosing between. 👇

When you take out life insurance or critical illness cover, your sum assured can do one of three things over time:

📉 Decrease
the payout reduces each year, usually in line with a repayment mortgage. Cheaper, but your cover shrinks as you get older.

➡️ Level
the payout stays fixed. Simple.

📈 Increase
the payout rises each year in line with inflation. The value stays protected.

All three options can be suitable depending on your situation.

The key thing is simply knowing which one you have, and why.

If you’re not sure what’s in place, it’s worth checking.

Stress
Anxiety
Burnout

And that’s just breakfast with 3 children 😮‍💨

But seriously, the key takeaway is:
You don’t need to be critically ill.
You just need to be unable to earn.

If you’re a parent relying on your income, that difference matters.

Turns out most of us self-employed parents have it backwards. We insure our businesses, our equipment, even our lives…

But, completely forget about the one thing that actually pays for it all & keeps our families afloat: our INCOME.

Here’s what I learned:
My business insurance doesn’t pay my mortgage.
Life insurance doesn’t help if I’m still alive but can’t work.
And savings? Gone in weeks, not months.

Income protection is the safety net between “I can’t work right now” and “we can’t pay rent this month.”

It replaces your income (up to 80%) if illness or injury stops you from working.

As a self-employed parent, YOU are the business.

Protect yourself like you protect everything else.

Have you looked into this yet?

Ultimate freedom, ultimate risk.

We chose that flexibility, but
We also chose risk 👇

47% of self-employed workers have NO income protection in place. None.

Here’s what that actually means: If you can’t work due to illness or injury, your income drops to £0. No employer sick pay. No safety net.

Just savings... until they run out.

As a former athlete, I learned this the hard way. One injury, career over.

Now I help self-employed parents protect their ability to earn.

Income protection isn’t sexy, it won’t get likes. But it pays up to 80% of your income if you can’t work due to sickness or injury - usually until retirement age.

With stats showing 1 in 7 people will be off work for 6+ months before they retire, how is your appetite for risk?

If anything ever happened to us… would they be okay 🤔

Here’s the truth many parents don’t realise:

➡️ Without a will, the Rules of Intestacy decide…

Not you.

Not your family.

Not the people you trust most.

That means:

❌ No automatic guardianship for the people you’d choose

❌ No certainty your children inherit what you want

❌ No control over who handles their money or when they get it

This isn’t about being morbid — it’s about protecting your children when they need you the most.

So until 23/12/2025, I’m giving all self employed parents a FREE basic will or mirror will for couples

It takes minutes to start.

And it could protect your children for life.

Share this with a self employed parent that needs to get their s*** together

A time of high stress, a serious illness or an injury can wipe out weeks, or months of income, leaving your family exposed.

Being self-employed means there’s no safety net.

Income protection fixes that.

If you’re a business owner, this is an HMRC recognised business expense 👀

Follow along for real ways to safeguard your family and your business 🙂
