Needham Market Raft Race

Needham Market Raft Race We are all about giving the people a family fun day out. we are a group of volunteers that work towards making the race day in Needham market one to remember.

2002 was the Queens Golden Jubilee year. Jenny Straughier the Chairman of Needham Market Neighbourhood Watch approached Debbie Cadman the Secretary, to suggest they get together to put on some events within Needham Market Suffolk to celebrate the occasion. Together with family and friends Tracey Cadman, Mel Copping, Teresa Gerrard, Karen Last, Jean Pittaway, Michael Richardson, Patrick Roberts and

Dawn Winder the Queens Golden Jubilee Committee was formed. 9 events were organised by the Committee over the Jubilee weekend starting with an auction of promises in aid of the Air Ambulance, music nights for old and young alike, and a procession through the Town to the Town Party, where we had the honour of being the first public outing for the 7 Air Assault Battalion Gun Run. Alongside these events, a raft race was organised by Karen Last and Michael Richardson at Needham Lake. So, on a sunny afternoon in June the Committee went along to act as marshals. 12 red, white and blue themed rafts took to the water and amid cheers from the vast crowd Alder Carr Farm complete with strawberries won the very first race. The Queens Golden Jubilee Committee decided that as they had enjoyed the day so much they would get together with the Raft Race organisers and make it an event in its own right. The Raft Race Committee was duly formed. In the early days, we didn’t know if we would have enough money to put the event on the following year. We need to have £5,000,000 (yes, 5 million) of Insurance which costs us over £900 every year. We also need to find funds to pay for lifeboats, lifesavers and first aiders. We have built up a good relationship with our competitors over the years, and we have more and more companies (and if you will forgive the pun) ‘coming on board’ with offers of sponsorship. At this current time we have sufficient funds in the bank to fund 2 more races. The Raft Race Committee is dedicated to making the Raft Race a free family day out and work hard all year round to make it the success that it is.

Today we collected the winners shield from last year's winners at Barking Hall.
We can't wait to find out which of our wonderful "Pop Icons" will be having their name engraved on it this year!
It's time to salute the winners from 2004 "Face Fuzz" as this is the small engraved plate that will move to the back of the full shield to make room for the newest entry.

The Raft Race theme in 2004 was "Shipwrecked". The worthy winners (Face Fuzz) were a team of community police officers, captained by Needham Market's own PC Paul Elding. 👏👏

ATTENTION ALL RAFT RACE FANS & HUNGRY RACERS!

Let’s be honest... paddling a homemade raft across the water is hard work, and cheering from the sidelines is even harder! You’re going to need some serious fuel. 🍔🍦

We have a great line up of food and drink outlets...Here is what's on the menu:

The Duck and Teapot 🦆☕ | Open all day long! Whether you need a morning breakfast boost, a hearty lunch, quick snacks, or hot & cold drinks, they’ve got you covered. And yes—they have the most important thing of all: ICE CREAM! 🎉

The Smokehouse School Bus 🚌💨 | Bringing all sorts of hot, smoky deliciousness. If you didn't try their pulled pork baps last year, trust us—you need to this year. We are still dreaming about them!

The Coffee Station ☕🌊 | Serving up perfect hot drinks right by the lake, so you don't have to miss a single second of the racing action to stay caffeinated.

The Donut Stall 🍩✨ | Back by popular demand! Because no event is complete without a sweet, sugary treat (or three).

We'd like to thank the River Gipping Trust and Eurofins Scientific for their help and advice, following reports of ecoli being present in the River Gipping on a couple of occasions recently.
Although the River Gipping doesn't flow into the lake, we wanted to be sure there was no contamination.
On 20th May, a test of the lake water was carried out and that gave us the 'clear to go ahead' news we hoped for.
There will be a second test carried out in the week before the race just to double check.

It isn't compulsory but some of our teams use the raft race to raise money for their favourite charities or local organisations.

And there's a trophy and prize (£50 sent to your charity from us) to be won for our chosen 'Fundraising Team of the Year.'

Here's a reminder of last year's winners - Alex and The Shipmunks who raised around £1000 for YOUNGMINDS!!
