Bookkeeping for people who are scared of HMRC !!

Let’s be honest — for a lot of small business owners, freelancers, and side-hustlers, HMRC feels terrifying.

The letters, the deadlines, the jargon… it can all feel like a ticking time bomb of admin and anxiety.
But here’s the truth: bookkeeping doesn’t have to be scary.
Once you’ve got the basics in place — knowing what to track, keeping your receipts in order, and understanding what you can (and can’t) claim — it becomes surprisingly straightforward.

A few things to remember:
* HMRC aren’t out to get you — they just want clarity.
* Good bookkeeping = fewer surprises and less stress.
* You don’t have to do it alone. The right bookkeeper can make the process calm, clear, and (dare I say) kind of satisfying.

If you’ve been putting off sorting your books because you’re afraid of getting it “wrong” — take this as your sign to start today. Future-you (and HMRC) will thank you.

How to prepare for MTD !!

Confirm your eligibility—review your gross self-employed/property income to see if you’re in scope. GOV.UKLow Incomes Tax Reform Group.

Switch to MTD-compatible software (e.g., Xero, FreeAgent) if you haven’t already.

Join HMRC’s testing programme to get hands-on experience before penalties apply. https://lnkd.in/etZJvnip

Set quarterly reminders (expected deadlines: early August, November, February, and May) to ensure timely filings.

Seek professional help—tax agents and accountants familiar with MTD can help streamline the transition.
In short: MTD for Income Tax—beginning 6 April 2026—brings significant change but also opportunity. With proper planning and the right tools, you can move from annual tax stress to smooth, timely, and accurate quarterly updates.

Ive had a recent testimonial from a client who I originally trained in Sage Accounts, this then led to a relationship with the client where I attend their office every quarter and reconcile all bank accounts and produce their quarterly VAT return.

This is something I do on a regular basis for clients who just need that extra assurance that their accounts are in good shape. Using Sage/Xero and Quickbooks software.

Please find below her testimonial;

"Working with Tracey has been an absolute game-changer for my business. She first started with us at our inception two years ago, to implement our accounting systems and then training us on all aspects.
Her attention to detail, professionalism, and deep understanding of financial management have brought a new level of clarity and confidence to my operations. I no longer worry about bookkeeping errors or missed deadlines — everything is handled with care and precision.
Not only is she incredibly reliable, but her proactive communication and willingness to go the extra mile truly set her apart. Whether it's preparing financial reports, managing accounts, or offering helpful insights, Tracey consistently delivers top-notch service.
I highly recommend Tracey to any business owner looking for trustworthy, accurate, and efficient bookkeeping support.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax rolls out April 2026
Heads up, sole traders and landlords—if your gross income from self-employment and/or property exceeds £50,000, you’ll need to switch to digital record-keeping and quarterly HMRC updates from 6 April 2026.

What’s changing?
• Ditch paper and spreadsheets—use HMRC-approved MTD software to maintain digital records.
• Submit quarterly summaries of income and expenses instead of one annual return.
• File your final declaration by 31 January following the tax year. These changes aim to smooth out admin, reduce errors, and bring your tax closer to real-time. GOV.UK

What’s ahead?
• The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027, and further to £20,000 by April 2028.
• New late-payment and filing penalties will apply—these include a 3% surcharge at 15 and 30 days overdue, plus 10% annual interest beyond 31 days. These will impact MTD users starting April 2026.

Page Partners Ltd can help with all of this and get you MTD ready, call now 0161 841 5493.

Tracey's Tuesday Tips;

Here's some further tips for doing your own Bookkeeping;

1. Understand Your Legal Obligations (UK-Specific)
Register with HMRC: If you’re self-employed, register as a sole trader or set up a limited company.

Tax Deadlines:
Self-Assessment: 31 January (online filing).
Corporation Tax: 9 months after your accounting period ends.
VAT: Usually quarterly (if VAT registered).
Keep Records for at least 6 years (HMRC requirement).

2. Choose a Suitable Bookkeeping Method
Single-entry: Simple, records income/expenses only. Suitable for sole traders.
Double-entry: More complex, tracks assets, liabilities, equity. Essential for limited companies.

3. Use Bookkeeping Software
Digital bookkeeping saves time and reduces errors. Popular UK options:
Free:
Wave Accounting
Zoho Books (free for small businesses)

Paid (Making Tax Digital compatible):
QuickBooks
Xero
FreeAgent (free for NatWest/RBS business account holders)
Sage Business Cloud

4. Track All Income and Expenses
Record every transaction (no matter how small).
Split expenses into categories: e.g. travel, advertising, office supplies.
Use business accounts: Avoid mixing personal and business finances.

5. Keep Digital Copies of Receipts
Use apps (e.g. Receipt Bank / Dext, QuickBooks mobile) to scan and upload receipts.
HMRC accepts digital records under Making Tax Digital.

Tracey's Tips;

Here are 5 practical tips for businesses managing their own bookkeeping:

1. Separate Business and Personal Finances
Why it matters: Mixing accounts can lead to confusion, missed deductions, and audit risk.
Tip: Open dedicated business bank and credit card accounts. Pay yourself a salary or owner's drawings rather than covering personal expenses directly from the business.

2. Stay Consistent with Record-Keeping
Why it matters: Accurate, timely records reduce stress during tax time and help with cash flow management.
Tip: Set a weekly or biweekly schedule to update your books. Use accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or Wave) to streamline the process.

3. Track All Income and Expenses
Why it matters: Missing transactions can lead to incorrect profit reports or missed tax deductions.
Tip: Reconcile accounts monthly, and keep receipts or digital records for all transactions—especially for meals, travel, and vendor payments.

4. Understand Basic Financial Reports
Why it matters: Knowing how to read a profit & loss statement, balance sheet, and cash flow report helps you make informed decisions.
Tip: Learn the basics or consult resources that explain financial statements in simple terms. Most software tools generate these reports automatically.

5. Know When to Ask for Help
Why it matters: DIY bookkeeping has limits—especially when tax law or financial strategy comes into play.
Tip: Consider hiring a professional bookkeeper or accountant at year-end, or during major financial decisions, like expansion or incorporation.
