FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — 2 June 2026

MEDTECH MAKERS LAB PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM'S PHTA TO ACCELERATE GLOBAL MEDTECH ENTRY INTO THE UK

Strategic collaboration opens new pathways for international innovators into Birmingham's health and life sciences district
MedTech Makers Lab Ltd (MML), the private sector venture builder and clinical development organisation, has entered into a formal strategic partnership with the Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA) at the University of Birmingham — creating a powerful new route for high-potential international medtech and life sciences companies to establish and scale in the UK.

The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding for an initial two years, will see MML and PHTA work together to attract, support and develop international companies into Birmingham's thriving health and life sciences district.

Companies introduced through MML will benefit from PHTA's specialist Category 2 laboratory space, advanced Makerspace prototyping facility, flexible workspaces, and access to a translational health innovation ecosystem anchored at No.1 Birmingham Health Innovation Campus.

MML's model centres on guiding companies from research through regulatory navigation, clinical development, venture building and capital formation, to commercial deployment — bridging the gap between promising innovation and investable enterprise. Together, the two organisations will serve companies working across medtech, diagnostics, digital health, robotics, AI, and life sciences.
Christian Kumar, Founder and Managing Director of MML, said: "MML works with ambitious companies that are ready to move from promising innovation towards clinical, regulatory and commercial reality. The West Midlands offers a compelling environment for those businesses, and PHTA provides exactly the kind of specialist infrastructure and ecosystem access that can make a real difference to their growth.

"The future of MedTech will not be built in isolation. It will be built through strategic cross-border collaboration, aligned infrastructure, and ex*****on-focused partnerships like ours, capable of turning innovation into enterprise value."

Professor Gino Martini, CEO of PHTA, said: "This collaboration with MML gives us another route to connect international companies with the facilities, networks and support they need to establish and grow in the UK. It also reinforces PHTA's role as a gateway into Birmingham's health and life sciences district."

This week, MedTech Makers Lab joined INOVIA and Ynovate to discuss how European incubators and accelerators must evolve beyond grants and mentoring into true commercialisation and venture-building ecosystems.

Europe has world-class innovation, but many founders still lack the regulatory, investment, and ex*****on support needed to scale internationally.

MML is building a pan-European commercialisation platform that connects emerging European technology with UK venture capital experience, regulatory expertise, and cross-border growth infrastructure.

This week, MedTech Makers Lab had the opportunity to deliver a workshop with INOVIA and Ynovate focused on one of the biggest challenges facing European innovation ecosystems today: moving from “supporting startups” to actually commercialising them.INOVIA has rapidly become an important innovati...

MedTech Makers Lab - Strategic Innovation

Most MedTech innovation doesn’t fail because of bad science—it fails because of weak ex*****on.

This article on MedTech Makers Lab challenges the traditional accelerator model, positioning MML as an ex*****on-led platform that integrates venture building, clinical development, regulatory strategy, and capital into a single pathway.

The focus is clear: move beyond innovation theatre and build IP-rich, globally scalable healthcare businesses with disciplined capital, structured governance, and real commercial traction.

In a market where capital is tighter and scrutiny is higher, the winners won’t be the most innovative—they’ll be the best executed.

Honoured and grateful to the British High Commission and Malta Enterprise for the opportunity to present MedTech Makers Lab’s vision for expansion across the European Union and beyond.

The combined UK and EU medtech and life sciences sector now represents a market exceeding €350 billion, with sustained double-digit growth driven by aging populations, digital health adoption, and advances in therapeutics, diagnostics, and medical devices. Europe alone accounts for c.30% of global medtech production, while the UK remains one of the strongest hubs for clinical research, regulatory excellence, and venture-backed innovation.

However, despite the strength of the ecosystem, fewer than 10% of European life science startups successfully scale beyond their home market, and only a small fraction progress from early clinical validation to sustainable commercial operations. Many existing programmes excel at early innovation and R&D support, but fall short when it comes to investment readiness, corporate structuring, cross-border expansion, and long-term scale.

At MedTech Makers Lab, our objective is to close this gap. By deliberately combining innovation, capital, and corporate strategic growth, we aim to increase the number of clinical enterprises that scale internationally materially — enabling startups to move beyond borders, attract aligned investment, and build resilient, investable companies.

Collaboration is fundamental to this mission. By bringing together entrepreneurs, clinicians, investors, policymakers, and industry partners, we can accelerate impactful solutions that improve patient outcomes, strengthen commercial scalability, and unlock greater returns for the UK and EU medtech and life sciences ecosystem.

Thank you again to all those supporting transnational innovation. The work we do together today will shape the future of healthcare tomorrow.
Together, we grow stronger. 🇬🇧🤝🇲🇹🇪🇺
