What does a bookkeeper actually do?
In broad terms we manage the day to day finances (all of those niggly bits that seem to take up all of your time) so that whatever it is that your business does, you can focus on what you do best.
We can manage bank reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, credit control, payroll, tax or VAT returns, preparing financial statements and management reports and more...some bookkeepers have experience in multiple areas, others will choose to focus on one aspect. Whether you can have one person do it all, or outsource to multiple people, will depend on many factors including the bookkeeper you choose/want to work with, and the size of your business!
Regardless of if you are an established business, or just starting out, using a bookkeeper can help you keep track of your money - our job is to know your business finances inside and out, make sure you stay in compliance with tax regulations, monitor your expenses and cash flow and help you improve or maintain your money management so that your business can flourish!
Of course there is no obligation for you to use a bookkeeper, and there are lots of software options for example, that advertise using them for this purpose. If you are planning to manage your accounts yourself, my biggest suggestion would be finding a bookkeeper willing to have a look over what you are doing and advise you of any errors you may have made, or things you could be doing more efficiently (yes we offer this service 😜) so that you can be confident that your business finances are as organised as they should be!
