Your cover was right for the life you had when you set it up.

But life moves.

Here are six moments that mean it is time to look again. I have ranked them by how much each one reshapes what your household is actually exposed to.

1. Taking out a mortgage.

The single biggest financial commitment most families make. This is the moment cover stops being optional and becomes structural.

2. Having a child.

The day someone else depends on your earnings, the cost of being unable to work rises sharply. That changes the income equation for good.

3. Going self-employed.

Leaving employment removes the employer safety net entirely. Cover that was fine on a salary is almost certainly no longer enough.

4. A big salary increase or a new financial obligation.

A second property, school fees, a proper pay rise. The sum your old policy was built around no longer matches what your household actually needs.

5. A relationship change.

Marriage, a new partnership, or a separation. It alters who the policy should protect and what the right benefit level is.

6. A serious illness in the family.

Even when it affects a partner or parent rather than you, it is a sign the risk landscape has shifted.

You just never know what’s round the corner. We all like to think ‘nothing will happen to me’, but guess what, it does. You could suffer an injury playing sport, doing DIY, playing with the kids, anything, and what if you can’t work for a while? Will your bills stop?
