Getting a separate work phone got me thinking about communication and our clients.
It's really important to us at LMO Bookkeeping, to check in and get our communication style right from the start!
π©Some people prefer detailed emails: the information can all be kept in one place, they're traceable, they can be digested in your own time and actioned as needed. You can even use ChatGPT or other AI assistants to get a list of workable actions from emails.
π€―We also appreciate that for others, opening their inbox can bring a sense of dread. An information-packed email peppered with action points can feel totally overwhelming and lead to avoidance altogether. Perhaps they've had negative experiences in the past with a boss sending an overload of information.
π¬Others prefer quick Whatsapp exchanges, for example when they have an idea, a question or need a reminder. It's ideal for getting quick and simple tasks done. This is where the dedicated work Whatsapp has been a game-changer! It's perfect for flexible and non-office based clients. What's more, the data is securely encrypted, and it's easy to transfer files to and from messages, both on mobile and computer.
πPrefer phone calls? These are a great way to catch up in between regular meetings and we also offer our quick, solution-focused 'Ask Me Anything!' calls for when you need a quick answer.
πOn a personal level, we think that training and helping clients to understand new software or methods, is best done face to face. Not only can you demonstrate and point things out there and then, but as an autistic business owner, body language is key. It's much easier to work out if someone is nervous or unsure in person, so we can adjust and rephrase when necessary. It's just much harder to pick all that up over a screen.
β Finally, whatever way we communicate, we always endeavour to translate accounting-speak into plain English - because HMRC needs its own translation service!
What's your communication preference?
