We’ve realised something, most people can’t tell you how a credit union is different from a bank.

And if we’re not explaining it, how will they ever know?

Here’s what sets credit unions apart:

✅ Owned by members, not shareholders – profits go back to you, not into bonuses.
✅ Ethical and community-focused – we reinvest in local people and projects.
✅ Fair and transparent lending – no sneaky fees or unfair penalties.
✅ Encouraging savings – helping you build a stronger financial future.
✅ Here for the long-term – putting people before profit, always.

We’re more than a place to keep your money, we’re a community working together.

It’s time everyone knew the difference.

Manchester Credit Union and Bolton-based Hoot Credit Union have merged in a deal that will improve access to affordable financial services across the north west.

Both credit unions are member-owned and not-for-profit, providing a wide range of savings accounts and affordable loan products to those typically underserved by mainstream banks.

Manchester Credit Union has 30,000 members across Manchester, Bury, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Bolton, Oldham, Salford and High Peak. The addition of Hoot strengthens Manchester Credit Union’s presence in Bury and Bolton and increases membership to 36,500. It also sees the combined loan book grow to £18.6m and savings portfolio to £19.3m.

Mandy Wilcock, CEO of Manchester Credit Union, said: “Bringing Hoot into Manchester Credit Union is great news for members of both organisations. A stronger combined asset base means we can lend more to more people at competitive rates, and expand our product offering too.

“But beyond the numbers, this also means we can reach more communities where access to fair and affordable financial services really matters and is most needed. We warmly welcome the Hoot team and members to the Manchester Credit Union community.”

Hoot’s Chief Executive Officer, Chris Canham, was instrumental in the merger, which also coincides with her decision to retire after 13 years with Hoot and two at the helm.

Hoot’s CEO Chris Canham said: “This is the right next step for Hoot members, and now the deal is done, it’s time for me to retire. Manchester Credit Union’s values have always aligned with our own, so this merger was an easy decision. I’m proud of what we achieved as Hoot, and know our members are in the best hands with Manchester Credit Union.”

Hoot’s Bolton branch on Victoria Square will remain open under the Manchester Credit Union brand, and Hoot staff will join the Manchester Credit Union team.
Hoot members will automatically transfer to Manchester Credit Union and can continue to access their accounts as normal.
