We want to make you aware of a new sophisticated scam called "The Mail Fraud Scam".

Fraudsters could use this scam to contact you via text or email explaining that your parcel has been delayed. They would ask you to pay a small fee to get it delivered the next day. They may even call you after you have given them your account details and ask for you to authorize a payment over the phone. A few hours, or even days later, you might see a significant withdrawal from your bank account.

These types of scams are now very common. Many people receive these weekly. The rapid and sophisticated nature of these scams means that they appear legitimate. Please be aware that no postage service will ever email or text to ask for a delivery fee.

Never give your personal details and bank account information to anyone you do not know or trust. We ask that you report and block all correspondence from these scammers, and report any emails to the Government Phishing email: [email protected]

If you have fallen victim to this type of scam, it is vital that you contact your bank immediately, and follow the steps provided on our website. If your bank is unable to help, Palmira Capital can investigate this matter for you, and submit a complaint on your behalf to your bank. You are, and should be, protected against these types of sophisticated scams. This is why we now claim redress for those who have fallen victim to an authorised push payment (APP) scam.

Palmira Capital is a Claims Management Company who is authorised and regulated by the FCA. You are not required to use the services of a regulated claims management company to pursue your claim as you have the possibility to present the claim yourself for free to the Financial Ombudsman Service or The Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Palmira Capital Limited works on a no-win, no fee basis. If your claim is successful there is a fee of 30% inclusive of VAT of the compensation amount.

An Authorised Push Payment (APP) scam happens when a person or business is tricked into sending money to a fraudster who is pretending to be a genuine person or organisation. APP scams remain the second largest type of payment fraud, following card fraud, both in the volume of scams and value of losses. In 2020, out of the total £207.8 million that has been lost through APP Scams, only £73.1 million has been recovered*.

There are different types of Authorised Pushed Payment (APP) Scams that you should be aware of :
*Insolvency Scam
*Mail Fraud
*Lottery or Prize Scam
*Mortgage Closure Scam
*Debt Collection, Settlement or Relief Scam
*Foreclosure Relief Scams
*Imposter Scams

All of these types of scams can be processed through all types of mediums. Including emails, texts, and calls. It is important to keep all records of communication with the fraudsters, as this will be helpful if you need to submit a complaint to your bank.

If you are unsure if something is a scam, try to call the business or individual they are claiming to be by using a number found on their website, and not the one on which they called you. If you are still unsure, contact Palmira Capital. We see these types of scams all the time. We will help identify a potential scam, and protect you if you have fallen victim.

If you fall victim of a Scam, you are protected under The Contingent Reimbursement Model (CRM) Code. This was set up in 2018 to reduce the impact and occurrence of Authorised Push Payment (APP) Scams. It is designed to help normal people, who have fallen victim of a scam and acted appropriately, get reimbursed. Many of the UKs largest banks have signed up to this CRM Code. These include:
Bank of Scotland
Barclays
Cahoot
Carter Allen
First Direct
Halifax
HSBC
Intelligent Finance
Lloyds Bank
M&S Bank
Metro Bank
Nationwide Building Society
NatWest
Royal Bank of Scotland
Santander
Starling Bank
Ulster Bank
If you have been a victim of a scam, you should contact your bank and prepare a letter that should include:
The purpose of the payment and the amount
How you made the payment (i.e., electronic transfer, cash, cheque, etc.)
How the fraudsters first got in touch with you
What steps you took to address any warnings you received from your bank (if any) prior to sending the payment

According to the Banks' regulatory obligations, upon receiving this report, they must respond to you within 15 business days. If the bank is unable to respond within this time-period, they must inform you as to why not. They are then allowed an added 20 business days to respond with a final decision.

If your bank does not uphold your complaint within the allotted time, contact Palmira Capital. After signing you up, we will analyse all the information, and submit a formal complaint to your bank. We are a no win, no fee, service and we believe that banks have a duty to detect, protect and respond to Authorised Push Payment Scams.

We want to make you aware of a new sophisticated scam going around. This is called the Insolvency or Escrow Scam. We have been made aware that non FCA Regulated Companies may contact you and claim that your money lost through investments, is waiting for you in escrow or via the insolvency firm. Typically, they will ask you to pay a front fee of 10% in order to access the money you are owed. Please be aware this is a scam.

We want to raise awareness of this scam, as individuals who have lost money through investments are more likely to be targeted than any other group. The insolvency firm or any other government body would never contact you about money owed and no government funded body would ask for a transfer fee. Fraudsters use sophisticated techniques to make you believe they are legitimate, even go as far as to clone numbers and emails from regulated bodies to convince you.

Never give your personal details and bank account information to anyone you do not know or trust. No company would ask for money with the promise to return a higher amount in the following days. This type of scam is used by criminals who lure victims into parting with a small amount of money – and their bank details – with the promise they will receive a larger sum in return for their services.

We ask that you report and block all correspondence from any insolvency firm, and report any emails to the Government Phishing email: [email protected]

If you have fallen victim to an Insolvency or Escrow Scam scam, it is imperative that you contact your bank immediately and follow the steps provided on our website. If your bank is unable to help, Palmira Capital can investigate this matter for you and submit a complaint on your behalf to your bank. You are, and should be, protected against these types of sophisticated scams.

There are many tactics fraudsters will use to convince you they are a legitimate party. There are some that are easy to identify, such as unusual email addresses or phone numbers. However, due to the pandemic, fraudsters are exploiting COVID-19 with new types of scams and they now use sophisticated, intuitive and nuanced tactics to scam you out of your money. Some common indicators are:
- Falsifying Numbers or caller ID. This is called Spoofing
- Emailing requesting personal information and bank account details. This is called Phishing
- Pressuring you, or acting non compliantly
- Calling you to confirm or authorise a payment
- Texting you regarding a delivery fee
- Asking for Money

It is important to note that your Bank or a Government funded body will never contact you via Telephone, Email or Text. Banks typically contact you through online Banking if they need to highlight an unusual payment. Additionally, no organisation would ask for a fee in order to release money to you. Never give your personal or bank account details to anyone you feel uncomfortable talking to. This is a good indicator of a scam. If it sounds too good to be true, it typically is.

If you believe you have given your bank account information or personal details to someone you do not trust, or are unsure about, contact your bank immediately. You can also call the 159 emergency hotline to help locate your bank’s dedicated fraud team faster. All banks should have a dedicated fraud team who can help you through this. If you believe you need extra help recovering your funds, contact Palmira Capital.
