Tax relief for the Married Couple's Allowance is 10%. This means that the higher earning partner gets 10% of the tax they pay. The benefit has upper and lower limits for both the amount of tax that can be claimed and how much that can be earned. This reduces their tax by up to £252 in the tax year (6 April to 5 April the next year).
The marriage allowance has been in effect since 6 April 2015. Some couples are only just becoming aware of the marriage allowance. The good news is that claims can be backdated for up to four years.

At AAMS we build REAL relationships with business people that enable us to help them overcome their challenges. Let our advisors do the same for you!

HMRC introduced new tax checks in April of this year and sent nudge letters to taxi and Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) drivers in England and Wales to complete when renewing their license, with plans for this to be rolled out to Scotland and Northern Ireland next year. . The purpose of these tax checks are to ensure that drivers are properly registered for tax. On completion, drivers are given a 9-character tax check code which is needed for their license application.

We strongly recommend that you contact your accountant as a matter of urgency if you receive a nudge letter so that they can help you ensure your disclosure is completed efficiently.

The penalty regime for all VAT registered businesses is changing from 1 January 2023 to become a “points” based system for late Returns.
This will completely replace the former default surcharge system.

Points will be recorded by HMRC based on each failure to submit a VAT Return on time. When the points total exceeds the relevant threshold a fixed £200 penalty will be imposed. After reaching the threshold no further points are added, but further £200 penalties are charged for each subsequent late Return.

The system is designed to reward good compliance, so when a period of full compliance is achieved the points are cancelled.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) may check your records to make sure you’re paying the right amount of tax. You must keep some VAT records digitally - unless you’re exempt from following Making Tax Digital for VAT rules.

Use a compatible software package or other software (like spreadsheets) that connect to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) systems.

If you use more than one software package to keep records and submit returns, you need to link them.
