TAX TIP to save you ££!

No, you don’t need to have a fancy offshore account to reduce inheritance tax bills. You've already been paying tax on your earnings haven’t you, so it’s a common question… why should you pay it a 2nd time?
We agree, and are happy to advise on the options to save the double-tax hit.

There are legal steps you can take TODAY, in order to reduce the total to be paid by those inheriting in your Will.
A bit of careful planning is all that’s needed.

Facts…
1. The first £325,000 of your assets isn’t liable for tax. It’s called the Nil Rate Band. If you're passing on a share of your house to children or are married, there are extra allowances.
2. Assets valued above your threshold are taxed at a rate of 40%.
3. Complex family situations and high house prices often make for big tax bills.

It’s not hard to see how the taxes due could be top-whack, if you own a property. That, combined with any savings and other assets you own… Ouch.

One of the simplest ways to protect your estate from being taxed in this way is to gift away some of your estate before you die. You can gift up to £3000 each year and each one will be completly exempt from the tax after 7 years.

Who inherits if you die without a Will?

The answer might not be who you think, or want...

What is a Trust?

It's a way of protecting your assets, and has been around since Homer's Iliad - not Homer Simpson 😉

Why would you want to use one? Well, there's lots of reasons:

What happens if your surviving spouse remarries after you die?
Well, your spouse's Will would be revoked and your children can easily be disinherited.

Your children get divorced.
Half of your inheritance could be taken by Mr/Mrs Wrong...

An inheritance gets squandered.
Adult children can make poor choices, or even end up bankrupt. A Trust can add a layer of protection to that, ensuring the money is only accessed in accordance with your wishes.

A Trust can speed up a house sale.
Rather than waiting months for probate, having a Trust in place means that your relatives can sell the house straight away and not have to wait up to a year for the probate to be granted!
