Greater Manchester Police stopped three 4x4 vehicles towing 3.5-tonne trailers carrying cars. All drivers were required to use tachographs.

One admitted they didn’t even know what a tachograph was, while another claimed to be a carpet fitter. Unsurprisingly, his insurance wouldn’t cover the vehicle – it was seized under Section 165.

Vehicles In Transit Insurance is NOT enough.

This post reminded me that many people assume that Vehicles In transit Insurance is all they need. Unfortunately, this does not provide any road risks cover or cover for the movement of vehicles for hire & reward. The existing motor Insurer will not provide cover for this activity. Motor Trade Road Risks cover (or in some special cases: Fleet Insurance) is required.

Another one van startup company stopped by RPU on the A1 today near Grantham. 1.2 tonne over plated GVW 🤦‍♂️ Driver reported for summons for dangerous load and vehicle prohibited 👍 An Audi Q7 does not belong on the back of 3.5 tonne van 👍

Top Tip Tuesday - Cover your Trailer

Your Road Risks policy will usually only provide Third Party Only Cover for trailers, so No theft or Accidental Damage cover. Trailers can be mind blowingly expensive so make sure you discuss additional cover with your Broker. This can be tagged onto your vehicles in transit policy - again watch out for unattended endorsements in the policy wording

Check the cancellation terms of your policy. There are usually these variations:-
Pro Rata - Provides a full refund of the unexpired Insurance
Short Period - A higher % is charged eg 1 month might cost 30% of the premium
Minimum Deposit - No return premium is provided in the event of cancellation
Refunds are not usually given if a claim is reported in the policy period

Its a nice problem to have but be careful out there!

As the weather gets sunnier, it's important to remember Rule 93 of The Highway Code ☀️

It says:

"Slow down, and if necessary stop, if you are dazzled by bright sunlight" 👀
