Let’s talk about gambling! 💷 Despite what people think, some gambling is ok. ✅ There is a huge difference between putting a few bets on your favourite football team at the weekend and excessive, repetitive bets on online slots.
What is acceptable?
💰 Infrequent betting that doesn’t look like an addiction. Bet on the football every Saturday with your mates? No problem!
💰 relatively small amounts spent that don’t constitute a monthly commitment and therefore affect your ability to pay a mortgage.
What isn’t acceptable?
❌ multiple daily transactions on betting sites. Casino slots are the main culprit here.
❌ ‘but I win a lot’ … winnings cannot be taken into account as an income or ‘cancel out’ the amount spent.
❌ large amounts spent that would need to be taken into consideration as a monthly commitment and therefore affect the borrowing amount.
Remember lenders want bank statements for up to 3 months and a mortgage broker will generally ask for 4 months!
Another reason why getting your mortgage in place as early as possible or at least having early ‘feasibility’ checks is so beneficial! 🤝
