Urgent Action Required: BT Redcare Announces Closure
Commercial building owners and residents with BT Redcare will need to find an alternative as the signaling system will be closed as of 1st August 2025.
What is BT Redcare?
British Telecom (BT) have a division called Redcare which provides alarm systems for homes and businesses across the UK. Redcare is one of the most popular alarm systems in both residential and commercial properties, with over 100,000 buildings relying on it. It operates through an analogue BT phone line, sending alerts to the owners and/or police if the alarm is triggered.
The discontinuation is part of the phase-out of the Public Switched Telephone Network to a fully digital network. BT Redcare have a portfolio of products including Redcare Essential, Advanced, and Advanced Extra, whose services will also be discontinued from 1st August. Once it is switched off, you will no longer receive notifications from your alarm.
What does this mean for my insurance?
Those with the systems are advised to find another solution, especially commercial clients whose insurance requires an alarm system in place.
Alarm standards in the UK have introduced single path (SP) and dual path (DP) categories of Alarm Transmission System (ATS). A similar product to Redcare Classic would be an ATS within the same Dual Path category, in this case a DP3. Many insurers will accept an ATS that meets the latest adopted version of BS EN 50136 and performs at DP3.
It is therefore important to ensure that the new system meets or exceeds equivalent standards and is installed by a company regulated by the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) or the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB). Your insurer will also require evidence of a maintenance contract if a claim arises.
Those in the industry expect product shortages and installation delays as the August deadline approaches as suppliers may struggle to meet the like-for-like demand, so make sure to anticipate the demand and sort an alternate early.
