Pride Month | The Power of Allyship and Belonging

As part of our Pride Month celebrations and Pride Teammate Resource Group (TRG) takeover, we’re proud to share a personal perspective from Graham Kelsall, Managing Director of our 3XD team in the North West.

Graham reflects on how workplace attitudes have evolved during his career, and why visible allyship and supportive communities matter more than ever.

“Born in 1969, I grew up at a time when there was little visibility or understanding of what it meant to be LGBTQIA+. I knew I was ‘different’, but didn’t have the confidence to fully understand or express it.

Early in my career, working in a very traditional environment, I kept that part of myself firmly hidden. At one point, a remark made in a team setting made it clear that being open about who I was could come at a cost. It reinforced a feeling that many will recognise - being alone, unsupported, and unsure who you could trust.

But alongside those challenges, there were moments that made a lasting difference. A friend who stood by me without judgement. A colleague who quietly shared their own experience. Those early acts of allyship created a sense of connection and support when it was needed most.

Over time, I’ve seen real progress. Workplaces have evolved, conversations have opened up, and inclusion is more visible and intentional. But that progress doesn’t happen by accident, it’s built through people, policies and communities working together.

That’s why initiatives like our Pride TRG are so important. They create space for teammates to connect, support one another, and influence positive change. Most importantly, they help ensure that no one feels they have to hide who they are, and that every individual feels valued, respected and able to be themselves at work.”

Thank you, Graham, for sharing your story and for highlighting both how far we’ve come, and the role we all play in continuing to build an inclusive environment.

At Brown & Brown, we’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels a true sense of belonging and where allyship is visible every day.

Have you met Cory?

As part of our Pride Teammate Resource Group (TRG) takeover, we’re sharing the voices and experiences of our teammates across the business. Here’s Cory Austwick’s perspective as Co-Lead of the Pride TRG.

“Hi, I’m Cory, a Commercial Insurance Advisor based in Penzance, Cornwall. I’ve worked for Brown & Brown for nearly three years and, alongside my Co-Lead Laura, I’m a Co-Lead of the Pride TRG. I’ve been part of the group since it began almost two years ago.

Q. Why did you join?

As soon as I heard about the TRG, I knew I wanted to be part of it. I wanted a seat at the table and for my voice to be heard. I also wanted to give something back to the LGBTQIA+ community, which has done so much to secure the rights and freedoms we have today.

Q. What have you gained from being a member?

So much it’s hard to narrow down. The TRG has helped me connect with teammates across the business I wouldn’t otherwise have met, giving me valuable insight into different areas of Brown & Brown. I’ve built great relationships that I’d consider friendships, and I’ve been able to lean on these connections in my day-to-day role.

It’s also helped me develop my communication skills. I had the opportunity to put forward a proposal to the group, which was accepted, and that experience has been hugely beneficial.

Q. How would you use what you’ve learned to help other teammates?

My position is that if I could help one person in life, that would be a success. My advice, don’t be afraid to try or to ask. If you’re doing your best but feel stuck, reach out. There are so many people in this business willing to help. The hardest part is finding the right person, but once you do, it can make all the difference.

Q. Any closing thoughts?

If you’re unsure whether a TRG is right for you, give it a go. Being part of this group has been one of the most positive parts of my time at Brown & Brown. The business cares, wants people to do well, and understands that when we work together, anything is possible. That is the true Power of WE.”

Thanks for sharing, Cory. We’d love to hear from you too – have you been part of a TRG or similar initiative? 👇

Standing Proud: The Evolution of PRIDE in the UK and the Insurance Industry

PRIDE in the UK began as an act of courage. When the first march took place in London in 1972, it was less about celebration and more about visibility, equality, and the right to be seen. Over the decades, that spirit has grown into a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we still have to go.

In the insurance industry, we’re seeing real progress as firms continue to embrace the value of inclusion. A sector once defined by tradition is evolving, recognising that an inclusive culture strengthens how we work, how we lead, and how we serve our customers. When people feel able to bring their whole selves to work, it fosters better collaboration, richer perspectives and stronger outcomes for everyone.

Within our organisation, our PRIDE Team Resource Group is proud to be driving change from within, raising awareness, building allyship, and working with leadership to ensure inclusion is more than a message; it’s something people feel every day. Whether it’s supporting teammates, sharing lived experiences, or helping shape a more inclusive culture, these small actions are adding up to meaningful progress.

PRIDE is still, at its heart, about people, about being seen, heard and valued. As we reflect on its history, we also recognise the role each of us plays in shaping what comes next. Together, we have the opportunity, and the responsibility, to keep moving forward and to be a genuine force for positive change for all our teammates.

As we continue our Pride Team Resource Group (TRG) social media takeover - recognising the positive impact of our TRGs across the business - we’re pleased to hand over to our teammate Angela Stone, People Coordinator, to share her perspective on allyship.

“The meaning of allyship for me is about education and awareness.

When I first joined the Pride TRG, my initial motivation was to help promote it and raise awareness of the work being done, topics being discussed and events being held. It has become much more than that, it’s given me the opportunity to listen, to learn, and to better understand the role I can play in creating a more inclusive environment.

I’ve realised that allyship isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about being open, being willing to learn and being prepared to challenge myself as well as others. It shows up in everyday actions, like listening without making assumptions, asking questions respectfully and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.

Allyship is important and helps create a culture where teammates feel safe, valued and able to be their authentic selves and also feel heard.

We all have a role to play in creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong.”

Thank you, Angela, for sharing your experience and for the role you and our TRGs play in helping every teammate feel valued and heard.

What do belonging and inclusivity really mean?

For us, belonging is about creating an environment where teammates feel seen, valued and supported to be their authentic selves – not just at certain moments, but every single day.

Inclusivity is about the actions that make that possible – actively creating a culture where everyone has equal opportunity to contribute, be heard and feel part of something.

During Pride Month, these ideas take on even greater meaning. It’s a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, reflect on progress, and recognise the role we all play in building a workplace where everyone feels they truly belong.

That’s why we’re proud to be hosting our Pride Teammate Resource Group LinkedIn takeover. Throughout the week, our teammates will be sharing their experiences, perspectives and stories, bringing to life what belonging and inclusion mean to them.

We hope these voices spark conversation, deepen understanding and continue to strengthen the culture we’re building together. Not just for Pride month, but everyday.

Because when people feel a true sense of belonging, they can thrive.

As we celebrate Pride Month and our Pride Teammate Resource Group (TRG) social media takeover, we’re highlighting the impact of our TRGs across the business. We’re delighted to hand over to our teammate Laura Scott, Senior Internal Auditor, to share her reflections on allyship.

“Allyship begins with honesty – and this is mine

I’ve been reflecting on what allyship really means.

As a white, middle aged woman from Barnsley working in insurance broking, I know I’ve often had the privilege of fitting in without thinking too hard about it. I’ve not had to question whether I can be myself at work in the same way many LGBTQIA+ teammates still do – and that’s why this matters to me.

Because allyship, for me, starts with recognising that difference.
Within Brown & Brown, I see the effort to create a more inclusive environment, but policies and statements only go so far. It’s the small, everyday moments that shape whether someone feels they belong.

It’s:
• choosing to listen and not assume
• admitting when I don’t fully understand
• challenging what doesn’t sit right, even when it feels awkward
• making sure voices are heard, not spoken over

Sometimes I get it wrong. Sometimes I worry about saying the wrong thing. But I’ve realised staying quiet helps no one.

In my role as President of the Insurance Institute of Sheffield, I’ve been talking about how Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging (DIB) can help attract the next generation. The more people I speak to, the clearer it becomes: people want to work somewhere they can be themselves. Fully. Not a version they think will be accepted. Not a watered-down identity. The real them.

If we want a future-fit insurance profession, allyship has to be part of that. Not as a buzzword, but as a genuine commitment from people like me who are still learning.

I’m proud to be on that journey. As part of the Pride TRG, I’m working with my teammates to foster community, support development, and help shape inclusive workplace cultures – and I know I’ve still got a lot to learn.”

Thank you, Laura, for sharing your story and for helping celebrate the role our TRGs play in making our workplace more inclusive for every teammate.

Celebrating Pride Month with the Pride TRG takeover!

This week, our Pride Teammate Resource Group (TRG) is taking over our LinkedIn page - and we couldn’t be more proud to celebrate the people, stories and perspectives that help shape our culture at Brown & Brown. Keep an eye out for posts across the week!

While this takes place during Pride Month, for us this is about far more than a moment in the calendar. Pride Month felt like the right time - chosen by our Pride TRG members - to shine a spotlight on our Pride TRG and share their voices more widely, but the work doesn’t begin and end in June. Creating an environment where every teammate feels valued, supported and able to thrive is something we are committed to all year round.

Our Teammate Resource Groups (TRGs) are voluntary, teammate-led communities that bring people together through shared identities, experiences and interests. They play a meaningful role in strengthening connections, encouraging open conversations and helping create a workplace where every teammate can thrive.

✨ We have team resource groups across a range of focus areas, and this is something we continue to build on - here are just a few examples of the groups we already have in place:

• The Pride TRG
• The Cultural Diversity TRG
• The Parents and Carers TRG
• The Neuro-inclusion TRG
• The Power Of She TRG
• The Abilities TRG

We’re excited to celebrate the Pride TRG, amplify the voices within our community and continue building a culture where everyone feels they belong. ❤️

A brilliant reminder of what makes Brown & Brown special.

During a recent trip to North Wales, it was a real privilege to welcome our founder, Hyatt Brown, and his wife Cici to our Denbigh office.

What stood out wasn’t just the visit itself, but the time they took to meet the team, ask questions, and genuinely understand the work happening on the ground. That level of curiosity, humility and interest, from the very top of the business says a lot about who we are.

It’s a powerful reflection of the culture we’re proud of at Brown & Brown: a business that stays close to its people, its customers, and its local communities, no matter how large we grow.

Moments like this reinforce what great service and long-term relationships really look like in practice.

Thank you, Hyatt and Cici, for taking the time to connect with the team. It meant a great deal.

Travelling more this year? Your insurance should evolve too.

Increased travel often happens gradually. One extra trip. Then another. Suddenly your single-trip cover no longer reflects your reality.

An annual multi-trip solution can offer practicality, continuity, and peace of mind, particularly if you travel frequently or at short notice. It can also reduce the risk of forgetting to arrange protection before departure.

But frequency is only part of the picture. Duration, destination, and business activity abroad all influence the cover provided.

We provide insurance solutions built around your travel patterns, not assumptions.

If your diary shows more trips than last year, it may be time for your insurance to catch up. Consistency in protection creates confidence when plans change unexpectedly.
