Before approaching a trade finance provider, can your business answer five questions?

1. Who are the parties?
2. What is being traded and under which contract?
3. Which payment, performance, or cash-flow problem needs to be addressed?
4. When does the need arise?
5. Which documents prove each stage?

Our monthly SME guide explains how to build a transaction map, cash-flow timeline, five document packs, and a practical consistency check.

Read the guide:

Prepare a trade finance request with a transaction map, cash-flow timeline, five document packs, consistency checks, and provider questions.

An SME wins an order, but the buyer asks for 90-day payment terms. What should the supplier do?

First, separate two periods:
1. costs before production and shipment;
2. the wait after invoice approval.

A purchase order is not automatically cash, and an approved invoice does not automatically qualify for financing. The contract, acceptance process, recourse, fees, and dispute rules all matter.

See the illustrative decision path—no approval or outcome is promised:

Illustrative case: How SMEs can separate pre-shipment costs from post-approval receivables when facing 90-day terms. No outcome promised.

What should an SME check before joining a sustainability-linked supply chain finance programme?

Start with the basics:
• Which invoices are eligible?
• Is financing with or without recourse?
• Which sustainability KPI applies?
• What baseline and evidence are required?
• Who verifies the result?
• Does performance change pricing or access—and is that documented?

Supply chain finance addresses working capital. The sustainability-linked layer adds measurable targets and governance. One does not prove the other.

What makes a trade transaction eligible for sustainable finance?

The new ADB–IFC Reference Note on Sustainable Trade Finance points toward a more structured answer: eligibility depends on the underlying activity and supporting evidence, not simply on the financial instrument used.

For an exporter or importer, useful preparation may include:

• a clear description of the goods and transaction;
• supplier and producer information;
• destination and intended use;
• relevant certifications or traceability records;
• any exclusions or safeguards that require review.

Letters of credit and guarantees can structure documentary and payment obligations. They do not automatically make a transaction sustainable.

International trade depends heavily on finance, with 80% or more of trade flows requiring some form of financing. Global trade and supply chains account for 25%–80% of global carbon emissions and face a wide range of sustainability challenges. Regulators, investors, and consumers now demand busine...

A practical letter-of-credit problem often begins before the documents reach a bank.

Illustrative situation: the invoice, packing list and transport document are prepared separately. The wording differs—which is not automatically a discrepancy—but key data conflict with the credit or with another document.

A better workflow:

• map every required document before shipment;
• assign its issuer, owner and deadline;
• compare names, dates, quantities and transport details across the full set;
• resolve impossible or unclear conditions through an amendment before shipment;
• run a final UCP 600/ISBP review before presentation.

The goal is not word-for-word repetition. It is a complete presentation whose data do not conflict.

Trade policy activity is rising—and importers and exporters may need to review contracts, documentation and payment structures more frequently.

According to the WTO–IMF Trade Policy Activity Index, activity averaged nearly twice its 2024 level in January–May 2026 and about 25% above the 2025 average. Meanwhile, the WTO Goods Trade Barometer remained above its baseline trend at 101.7 in June, although momentum showed signs of slowing.

This week, Credit Glorious will examine practical ways to strengthen payment security, documentary discipline and transaction resilience.

Important: Trade-finance instruments address defined payment and performance risks between commercial parties. They do not insure against tariffs, sanctions or geopolitical disruption.
