It’s one of the questions accountants hear all the time.

A business expense generally needs to meet the relevant rules to qualify.

A laptop for work? Potentially. Professional software? Likely. A business lunch? It depends.

Your new sofa because you answer emails from it? Let's talk.
If you're unsure whether something qualifies, ask before claiming it.

Sales are up, clients are coming in, and your order book looks great. So why does your bank account still look questionable?

Because profit isn't the same as cash flow.

You can be profitable on paper and still struggle to pay suppliers, staff, or HMRC if your cash is tied up elsewhere.

Good accounting means understanding not just what you've made, but where your money is going.

Can the company pay for the Christmas party? 🎄

Sometimes, yes.

Employers can generally provide an annual Christmas party or similar social event without the benefit being taxable, provided it’s open to employees generally, and the **cost is £150 or less per head**.

And yes, that’s **per head** not £150 for the entire office.

Just remember: the £150 is an exemption threshold, not a tax-free allowance. If the cost goes over the limit, the full benefit may become taxable.

So go ahead and celebrate. 🥂

Just make sure the numbers add up before the ch*****ne starts flowing.

If you run a limited company, there are several ways you may be able to take money from the business, including salary, dividends and reimbursed expenses.

They don't all work in the same way from a tax perspective, and the right approach depends on your circumstances.

Before transferring money from the company account to your personal account, check how it should be treated.

Five minutes of planning can save hours of untangling later.

Being self-employed gives you independence, flexibility and control. It also means keeping records, understanding your tax obligations and occasionally trying to decipher HMRC terminology.

You don't have to do everything yourself.
A good accountant can help you understand your numbers, stay organised and plan properly.

You run the business. Let someone else worry about the numbers.

Good bookkeeping isn't just about making your accountant happy. Your accounts should tell you what's actually happening in your business.

Who owes you money? What are your biggest costs? Are your margins improving? How much VAT is coming due?

If you're only looking at your accounts once a year, you're essentially driving while looking in the rear-view mirror.

Useful, but not ideal.

If you’re self-employed, your Self Assessment return is essentially HMRC asking, “So… what did you actually earn?”

But it’s not just about reporting income. Knowing which expenses you can legitimately claim can make a real difference to your tax bill.

The trick is knowing the difference between a genuine business expense and something you just really, really want to put through the business.

When in doubt, ask your accountant!
Anumerate is here to help.

There’s a lot to think about: Customers. Employees. Cash flow. Growth. Tax. Strategy.

We assist businesses with the administrative and compliance side of running a company, helping directors stay organised and focused on what they actually want to be doing: running the business.

If your company is profitable, Corporation Tax is part of the cost of doing business.

Our Corporation Tax service combines compliance with proactive advice, because preparing the return is only part of the job, the real value is understanding what the numbers mean and what you can do with that information.

There's a difference between having an accountant and having a financial adviser who understands your business.

Business advisory should help you answer questions such as:
• Can we afford to hire?
• Should we invest?
• Where are our margins being squeezed?
• What does our cash flow look like over the next six months?
• Are we pricing correctly?
• What does growth actually mean for our profitability?

At Anumerate, we work with business owners to turn financial information into practical insight and better decisions.
