Financial Markets Indaba was honoured to once again co-host the 3rd Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) High-Level Roundtable on Critical Minerals Development in Africa, held in New York on the sidelines of UNGA81.
The Roundtable is emerging as a consequential African-led platform for shaping the continent’s critical minerals agenda, bringing together African Ministers, policymakers, private-sector leaders and global investors to move from strategy to ex*****on. Convened under the patronage of H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, represented by H.E. Kashim Shettima, GCON, the discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s collective position across global critical mineral value chains.
A major outcome was the signing of the Continental Integration and Economic Assurance Declaration (CIEAD) by initial signatories Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia. The Declaration seeks to strengthen coordination between mineral-producing, transit, processing and manufacturing countries through Strategic Mineral Corridors, geological mapping, digital traceability, Regional Processing Hubs and sovereign equity structures. The initiative represents an important shift towards using Africa’s mineral resources to advance beneficiation, industrialisation, regional integration and greater African participation across the value chain.
The significance of the platform was reflected in the breadth and seniority of participation, including the Chairman of the AMSG, H.E. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals, Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Louis Watum Kabamba, Minister of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo and AMSG Vice Chairman; H.E. Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates; Ministers responsible for mining, petroleum and energy from Kenya, Liberia, Chad and The Gambia; and senior representatives from Zambia and other African markets.
The Roundtable also connected this African ministerial leadership with international capital and strategic partners, including Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of Africa Finance Corporation; Prof. Kevin Chika Urama, Chief Economist and Vice President at the African Development Bank Group; Atanas Bostandjiev, Founder and CEO of Gemcorp; representatives of the U.S. State Department, European Commission, International Trade Centre and Türkiye, alongside sovereign wealth, mining and investment leaders.
By bringing these constituencies together around an agenda defined and led by African countries, the AMSG Roundtable is developing into an important platform for ensuring that Africa speaks with greater coordination on its critical minerals, develops the structures required to attract long-term capital, and converts its strategic resource position into sustainable economic and industrial value for the continent.
