The Dollar continued its recent weakening last week as US data continues to point towards a soft landing for the US economy. Sterling-Dollar thus pushed to its highest since the start of September by the close on Friday.

Aston CM Update -

Inflation continued to slide in all corners of the globe during October, according to data released last week. The UK, US and Eurozone are all now beginning to see the lagged impact of their interest rate hike cycles.

As has been the case recently, UK data continues to underwhelm. The economy failed to grow at all in Q3, despite 0.2% growth recorded for September. The current high interest rates may well be strangling the economy. The latest round of inflation numbers for the UK land this week on Wednesday.

We had the latest Bank of England meeting last week, which as expected saw Andrew Bailey and Co continuing along the Top of “Table Mountain”. The Federal Reserve also followed suit with a hold/pause with their own rate announcement.

The European Central Bank have now joined the “pause” brigade, holding interest rates in their most recent meeting. With inflation slowly falling in the bloc and the economic outlook remaining uncertain, this seemed like the only real option for Lagarde and Co last week.

UK inflation remained stable in September as fuel prices continued to impact the cost of living. Many major food items did start to fall though. With the latest Bank of England rate announcement ten days away, a further pause in the rate hike cycle looks likely.

Market movements last week were dominated by Jobs data out of the US and their impact on inflation, the wider US economy and thus interest rates. Events in Israel over the weekend though, have understandably impacted rates as we open a new week.

Pretty much all European and US news last week, and that was before the Ryder Cup had even started in Rome! The Dollar now has a run of eleven straight weeks of gains versus the Euro, such is the might of the greenback at present. It begs the question, when will that run end?

Ten interest rate hikes in a row from the Bank of England came to an end, as a surprise drop in UK inflation led policymakers to opt for a pause. Sterling remains under pressure, with little by the way of UK data releases to support it as we enter a new week.
