New figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request suggest families could be losing up to £874 million of government-funded childcare support as more parents breach the frozen £100,000 income threshold.

The Department for Education estimates that between 50,500 and 99,000 children were affected by the earnings limit in the last tax year, with households losing access to tax-free childcare and 30 hours of free childcare once one parent exceeds the threshold.

Financial experts argue that the cliff-edge is counter-productive for a policy designed to help parents work, as it encourages them to cut hours.
